Raising Hell

Ancient Mariner
I pulled this out of the archives and watched it this afternoon.  I thought the band sounded good, though it is odd not watching these older videos with 2 gutarists and Bruce with long hair.

The magic stuff was cool in parts, but a bit too lenghty for my taste, but I have never been a big magic fan.  It was a nice sendoff for Bruce though :)

I will be intersting to see if this gets released as part of the "history of" when they make it this far.

That performance is nothing special IMO. The whole thing is sterile, the magic isn't all that special, it just interrupts the music. The sound production is terrible, very muddy. But I guess that was Maiden's live sound at the time.

And it's obvious how Steve and Bruce are avoiding each other all the time, they haven't even looked at one another. Also, in the official biography, I think Steve said that he was so furious at Bruce

After reading the biography, it is hard to watch this show.  And the magic crap is ridiculous.  I bought it to complete my official Maiden dvd collection, but I never watch this anymore.  I'm looking forward to a real FOTD DVD show though: Donington!

I had some friends over to watch when it was first released and I was completely embarassed as everyone howled with laughter at the cheesiness of it.  The sound was muddy, the 'magic' corny, and the vibe was weird.  It's hard to imagine that this was the same band that released LAD.

Raising Hell is much better than Donington.

In terms of being watchable I completely agree.  Donington with it's quick editing and black and white to color switches and slo motion effects is frustrating as hell to watch.

Raising Hell suffers from the lame magician and the venue, but the performance is adequate for that era of the band.  Too bad the DVD release cut out some of Bruce's (brief) speeches that aired with the "live" broadcast.

I remember watching Raising Hell back in 1993 and it was a real bittersweet event.

Hilarious!  This was the first Iron Maiden DVD I ever bought, back in 2000.  And just like you, I had friends over after telling them how awesome Maiden was live, and it was embarassing.  Not to mention, it's not a "true" live show, but just a bunch of people watching Maiden go thru the motions at Pinewood Studios.  I haven't seen the Donington video, only heard the CD, but can't imagine it being worse than Raising Hell.

the whole thing is on google video. (is that info allowed here?)

Yes.

I think we'll be changing the copyright-related rules shortly, but copywritten stuff posted on Youtube is Youtube's problem, not Maidenfans's.

Raising Hell. The magic is shit. The band don't wanna be there, the singer doesn't give a flying fuck. 1/5.

Donington '92. Awful to watch. Despise the black and white footage and the constant stock footage is extremely annoying. Couldn't just point a few cameras at the stage and record, had to fuck around with it. Production isn't great either. 2/5. The cd: 3/5. ;)

So, I take it by that rating that Donington is TWICE as good as Raising Hell!  :innocent:
