Would you be prepared to not get an Iron Maiden CD if it had Debbie McGee on the front? Would you refrain from buying it if it looked bad? [/quote]
I'm making the correction then [!--emo&

I would buy any Maiden album, even it was covered in a fishy newspaper. Why? Because I love Maiden's music. I have confidence in them. All they create has at least an value for my archieve. I never said cover determines my choice of album I'll buy. But AFFECTS the experience I get from it afterwards. Because, it is a side element when it comes to music. It is like the face of the girl/boy you meet. You understand who he/she is after talking with him/her. You see the cover even before listening to music. And the ONLY way to avoid its effect, is to buy the album without a cover.
I'm not insisting in Derek Riggs style cartoonish covers. I loved BNW cover and Merlin's Fear of The Dark Cover, they're in my top five IM covers. But Let's face it, DoD cover is even bad for an amateur band.
And sorry, it creates the feeling of they don't care for their creation as they were caring in the past. (The same can be applied for production!) If you care for your creation, you accept only what is perfect. You try until it takes its perfect form, you hire the best personel (as your budget permits) If they asked the opinion of someone with even little knowledge about visuality, he couldn't answer "yes it's nice and 'original'". And I think this may answer, at least partially, your probable question: "how a cover can affect our experience?"
And for musical side of your question. I don't think Iron Maiden sucks right now. But I think they are not the band they were in the past. BNW was a good attempt, but DoD is inferior to BNW. We can discuss the reasons why in an other thread, but I wish the fact that I'm not sharing your opinions won't affect your objectivity and consideration towards me.
