Questions for older fans

I remember some kid writing to Jimmy Saville and the mighty Maiden agreed to let this kid watch the show from the side of stage.
It was Somewhere on Tour in 86 and was shown on primetime TV on Saturday night on Jim'll Fixit.
I was one jealous 11 year old watching that !!

The kid grew up to be Dom Lawson, http://domlawsonlikesheavymetalmorethanyou.blogspot.com/, who wrote for Kerrang! and now Metal Hammer. Indeed, he was responsible for the Hammer's Final Frontier review....

My first listen to Maiden was in 86 when a friend taped for me a copy of the NOTB album. The recording was messed up cos the tape began with side b and the first song was NOTB...and the intro speech was completely missing. For atleast a year, until another friend taped me a copy of Live After Death, I didn't realise that there was a spoken intro to NOTB. And to this day I still feel that the album should open with side B before side A. I consider the title track the album opener and 22AA the closer.

I remember the backlash from some fans when SIT came out because of the use of synth. After the massive Powerslave and World Slavery Tour it seemed the synth was considered by many to be an error for a metal band. Yet over time both SiT and SSOASS were considered classics.

The spandex worn by the band during the 80s was wild but seemed so normal and rockstar at the time. Crazyness!

Oh, as an old geezer...  (ok 43 isn't that old..is it?)  I always love these type of questions.  I know I wrote about it before, but my first experience with Iron Maiden was right before the NOTB came out.  Living in California thru High School, a bud had asked me if I'd heard of Iron Maiden, and I thought he meant that Black Sabbath did a followup to Iron Man, but about a woman this time.  Yeah, he gave me a hard time.  His dad was in the Air Force (if I remember right) and he had a ton of albums from England.  He showed me Iron Maiden, and Killers, and I had him put on the killers album first.  I was blown away, by the music, and the two gross album covers.  I was hooked.
Through rock magazines, we had heard that Paul was thrown out, and a new fellow from a band called Samson had been brought in to replace Paul.  Seemed like forever till release day of the NOTB, but we went to the record shop, and waited and both bought the album.  Well, I wasn't too impressed at first, this Bruce guy wasn't Paul.  Took a few spins (like almost every Iron Maiden album does for me) to get into it.  But I grew to love it, and them we went to see the Scorpions on their Black out tour, and Maiden was opening for them.  So that was my first Maiden gig.

Well to say I've been a Maiden nut for years, isn't a bad thing.  I followed them thru thick and thin, and have loved it all.  They are without a doubt my favorite band ever.  I never grow tired of them.  Every album has an awesome memory for me.

Thanks for letting an old dude rant, now get off my lawn ;-)
Up The Irons!!! :rocker:

Spidey 43 isnt old at all man its a whole 3 years younger than me and "much" younger than the band :)
My first taste of Maiden was when in 1980 as a 16 year old i went for a job interview in Dundee,Scotland and wandered into a record store and saw the Iron Maiden album to be honest it was the album cover that attracted me at first as i had never heard of the band when i got home i stuck it on the old record player and was blown away !!!I have been a fan ever since.Have to admit i never liked Dianno his voice was reasonable but his image and stage craft was awful being a huge Deep Purple,Gillan, Rainbow and Whitesnake fan at the time(still am!!) he vocally simply didnt match up to messrs Gillan Coverdale and Dio IMHO but instrumentally the band were fantastic when i heard Bruce was joining i was quite excited as i had seen him perform with Samson (they were supporting Gillan) and had thought at the time he was very good and had that certain something though i had no idea that Maiden would go on to conquer the world as they did.As far as information on the band was concerned then it was the Sounds magazine  and the Friday Rock Show for me in the main and of course word of mouth. Sounds was actually very good for info on the NWOBHM bands and supported a lot of them at the time.

Kind of funny about the mix up with side A and B. It reminds me that my original copy of Number of the Beast on Vinyl the labels on the album themselves are on backwards.

I was actually relieved when I heard SIT.  Powerslave always seemed (and still does) kind of dry and feeling-less, so I was very happy about the addition of guitar synths on SIT.

I've been a fan since 1988, though I was 8 years old then.  I'm 30 now.  I didn't get to experience Maiden when albums like NOTB were new, and when I was 8, I certainly didn't understand why I liked them so much.  SSOASS was the first album I ever heard by them, and it blew me away.  Since I am essentially reliant on the internet for all my news and goings on, how did you older fans deal with things that you experienced?  What was it like when Paul left, or when the follow up to Powerslave had guitar synths?  How did you get your news?

I've been into Maiden since about 1985 I had bought Powerslave then soon after the world slavery concert from 'Live after Death' was put on MTV (yes they actually played metal back then) I was in the 7th grade and thought WOW these guys are amazing. The first concert I got to see live was the somewhere in time tour.

I always rode my bike to the drugstore and bought Circus magazine or Hit Parader and that's how I used to get all my info on the bands I liked back then. They also used to include posters in those mags as well which got pasted all over my walls. The full size eddie door poster was a hit with my parents.  ;)
