Question about Hallowed be thy name

Being an atheist I don't believe anything happens after you die (other than de-composing of course), but death still bothers me. I don't fear for what might happen, I have more fear about what will happen while I am still alive.

Are you spiritual Albie ?  :)
Am I spiritual? Not really - but my wife is. And am I afraid of dying? No, I'm more afraid of not living - if that makes sense.

But always in the back of my mind, I have this vision I will die an horrific death. That's what too many action movies do to you. :D

Not necessarily. Dying can be well done in a bed with half your limbs gone, or it can be well done saving a thousand lives. It's about the way you feel when you die.

Exactly. The way I see it death is a very welcomed thing. Not only is it the natural course of any living organism, but for the "sophisticated" and "civilized" homo sapien, it means no more taxes, no more going to work, no more worrying why your kids are not home yet, no more fear of joblessness, homelessness or just bothered by the daily tragedies of life.

This might sound a tad depressing so I'll just say this. I LOVE, being alive, I relish the challenges that each new day brings and I am one of few people that enjoys, yes, ENJOYS paying bills, because it is proof to me that I am finally responsible for my own well-fare. But that does not negate the fact that I welcome death as much needed, very much eternal rest from a, hopefully, well lived life.

Absolutely, is what I fear as well and is what I meant by 'afraid of dying'

Speaking about death, I've faced it previous Thursday (21 January 2010, the day that no5 faced death)

1. All my life did not pass in front of my eyes in 5 seconds.
2. Those that could be my last words were in English -which is not my native language.
3. Those words were 'What the fuck are you doing, you bastard ?'
:D
4. Seriously.

Maybe we mean the same. The way of dying has to do with all this. Its length, the suffering, the pain, the thoughts, etc.

Speaking of thoughts...

When I think of death, I don't think of death itself. I think more of the fear of/sadness to miss someone who is dear to me.

My grandfather lived in hospital for over 6 months in a lot of pain, but he decided when it was time. I think that's a damn good way to go.

So, to atheists:  can an atheist not believe in 'god' and still believe that death doesn't mean the total end of existence?  Is it possible, that even without a heaven or hell, there could be some further level of existence?

Who knows? There's no evidence suggesting there is, but we can be hopeful something happens.

Yeah, I don't believe there's something after life. That's why death scares me when I think about it. It's the end of life rather then "the beyond" that I'm afraid of.

Yes, of course. I do believe in some "spiritual" stuff, but i also believe that one day we'll pull out nice scientific explanations for them.
Atheism is simply absence of belief in god of any kind.

Therefore, atheists can also believe in reincarnation, etc...

Traffic related?

Eddies Wingman, you are really an engineer  :)

Yes, I was in a 'taxi' with my side's door broken, and no seat belt
Highway. The man is driving at 120 km/h.
His phone is ringing. The same time he wants to light his cigarette.
He is completely letting the wheel and the car is heading towards a solid cement pillar, right to the extension of the asphalt.
No sidewalk, protective bars, elevating ground, anything like that. The pillar is exactly in the extension of the road.

I'm watching the car moving towards the pillar at 120 km/h and this guy just doing his things !! Remember : No seat belt.
A fucking few meters -real few- before crashing, I'm shouting at him take the wheel in my hands and bring the car in the straight line.

I'm continuing to insult him for a while -too nervous I was- he was just laughing. Incredible. Laughing.

Truly a frightening experience, I guess it can be compared to having the guards marching you towards the gallows ...

I would have showed up at the police station and give them a hint about this taxi driver ...

However, answering the phone or lighting a cigarette are not the most bizarre things people have been doing while driving: http://www.nettavisen.no/motor/article2770198.ece (Norwegian article, but the picture does really say it all)

I remind you that he was talking and lighting his cigarette the same time  :D

By the way the plane I was in, just before a while, faced a mechanical problem in the air.
They returned us back and now are trying to fix it.
So, I keep a deliberation if I finally escaped death or not... :S
