Re: Dark Side of the Moon Landing - Pink Floyd Week on Maidenfans

Oh well, I missed the word "exactly".  You know what I meant.  :)

Does anyone else think the Ummagumma live disc is absolutely brilliant? That's probably my most played Floyd record nowadays.

I don't know if I'd go as far as brilliant, but it's very good.

Then again, I think I've been stoned every time I heard it. So who knows?

I finally bought the "Ummagumma" album. I borrowed this LP in 1999, so it was a long time since I heard it. I remember that I liked the live stuff way more than that studio noise but now I seem to tolerate the more experimental soundscapes. Nice how they divided the songs between the four. Almost like 4 solo EPs were pressed into one album. Still, these works fit very well together.

Listening again to the live album I must stress that I am in total awe when I hear Richard Wright doing his arabic solo in Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun:yes:

Interesting trivia I found on wiki about its studio version:
According to an interview with David Gilmour on the 2006 documentary "Which One's Pink?", the song features minor guitar work both from Gilmour and Syd Barrett, making "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" the only Pink Floyd song that features all five band members.

I think Wright's and Gilmour's pieces ("Sysyphus" and "The Narrow Way" respectively) are good, but "Grantchester Meadows" is a bit meandering, "Several Species..." comes across as strange for the hell of it, and "The Grand Vizier's Garden Party" is one of the worst Floyd songs - making the studio disc is an uneven experience at best.

By the way, is anyone else familiar with the Zabriskie Point recordings? There are some interesting and rather uncharacteristic compositions kicking around there.
