Dick Brucinson

The TRUE Dick Brucinson
Listening to Beast Over Hammersmith again and again these days, and I'm blown away by the entire performance of all 18 songs ever since, the album just doesn't get boring. If you were to pick the three best performances out of it - which songs will you go with?

My vote (in no particular order):
Transylavnia
Killers (I love how aggressively Bruce is singing that one)
Run To The Hills (I love once again how aggressively Bruce is singing that one)

Note:
Please consider one thing: This thread is NOT about your favourite song(s) from that era. Think a moment of the actual question, which is basically all about performance. So if you'd generally e.g. rate let's say Drifter low in your personal book, it could in this case well be a proper choice anyway - because of its performance. ( @AncientMariner_Essex had some excellent words in another recent thread of mine about how questions in here are getting misunderstood often :ok: )

Wrathchild - Tight and ferocious, nice little extra melodies here and there. By the time of the scream in the middle I bet those who saw Bruce live for the first time and had doubts or concerns beforehand were won over

Total Eclipse - Bruce attacking the lyrics with menace and delivers raw vocals

The Prisoner - Very identical to the studio version, well not surprising considering it was only recorded I think less than 3 months earlier, but slightly faster which makes it even better + transition from Davey´s solo to final chorus is something else

Honourable mention - 22 Acacia Avenue, did not make the top-3 as Bruce is still quite cautious and tame compared to few months later when he was on top of the song

Tough question because all are so good.

Hallowed is one for sure. As for the others: Drifter, Sanctuary, Wrathchild, Transylvania, Prisoner, Children, Number, and Murders.

Why? Close to the studio versions, Bruce's brutal vocals. Not to mention solos, bass playing or drumming.

What an epic live album Hallowed Be Thy Name absolutely stole the show, but “Run to the Hills” and “The Number of the Beast” are legendary too!

It's difficult for me to make a choice, simply because I'm really not a big fan of this album.

Despite my issues with Bruce during that time, I really love this album's version of Another Life. The intro with the hi-hat groove is so much cooler than the original tom fill used before and after that tour. A shame that it didn't return in this form for the Early Days tour.

I think the NOTB songs are the best. Never really liked Paul songs performed by Bruce. Acacia, Hallowed, RTTH and Children especially were so good.

What's your Bruno issues during that time, if I may ask?

(Everything that follows is just my opinion and entirely subjective)
I don't particularly like his air raid siren days. He has always been a phenomenal singer, don't get me wrong.

The range that he had back then was utterly insane and some of the pitches he could hit (the ending of Total Eclipse for example) were mind blowing. At the same time, I really dislike some parts (like the ending of Total Eclipse) which sound entirely unmusical to me. Impressive? Absolutely. But also annoying and obnoxious.

The more pressing issue was his lack of control. He was a bundle of energy, which resulted in amazing and entertaining live shows, but his pitch control was pretty bad. He did that in the studio as well (opening verse on Run To The Hills) but live it was audible on most songs. Some notes he would sing a bit flat, not quite reaching the pitch. My main issue though was his constant overshooting of pitches. There are so many melody lines, where he'd rise, reach the correct pitch and then go even beyond that.
He also didn't have the most healthy technique, which cost him dearly in the years afterwards, combined with the grueling touring schedule.

My favorite era of Bruce was 1994-2008-ish. If I had only heard his early 80s performances and didn't know how he'd turn out later he wouldn't have become one of my favorite singers, that's for sure. Though credit where credit's due, he sounds amazing on most of Piece Of Mind.

Happy to see someone else list Transylvania.
That studio version of that song struck me as just ok however when I first heard the BOH version I was blown away.
And I still am when I hear it now.

Overall, what a great Maiden show to have captured on video. I was pleasantly surprised to see my top two were the consensus top two . My third place was consensus fourth place tied with another I didn’t vote for at the time I voted (2nd day of July, year of our Lord twenty and twenty-five).

Killers - especially those screams
Phantom of the opera - the speed of it is stunning
Run to the hills

It's nice to hear the new material at the time without everyone knowing the words to the now obvious hits. Refreshing looking back

It's my go to live album at the moment

Yeah, it's wild to hear the opening to Hallowed and the audience not knowing what to expect.

Amazing show with the band firing at all cylinders. The opener MITRM and Killers are simply mind blowing. The rest of the setlist is amazing as well yet I'll go with Total Eclipse since it was never played again after this tour and the band nailed it 100% here.
