The thing with Sonisphere is that it's a touring festival so there's less negotiating and it gives the band a solid string of tour dates than they can fit other shows around. Plus Maiden's booking agent co-owns Sonisphere. (The UK-leg also needs a solid booking after cocking up this year, if they decide to run the festival again.) They played on that tour in 2010-2011 too and I think there was a fairly credible rumour that they have agreed to (or at least in advanced dicussions to) play Sonisphere France next year which might be the same weekend as the Knebworth leg. That point didn't even come to mind. Maiden play festivals such as Rock am Ring, Graspop and Wacken. Those aren't little underground festivals. They are the biggest festivals in Europe, with an attendance of upwards 100,000, the biggest crowds legally possible. Sonisphere is modest, by comparison. And Maiden don't play somewhere in the bill, they are headliners.
