NOW WATCHING

That's one heck of a list. Unfortunately I haven't seen enough of the movies on there to make an informed decision as to which movies/actors I'd like to see get an Oscar.

The reason I hit the reply button was not because of the Oscar nominations though. I have another movie to report on: Cloverfield. There was alot of hype around this movie and while most of it is over the top and unbelievable (yeah right they would survive so long with so many close encounters), I liked it because of letting it all be from the perspective of a home video camera. This gave the whole thing an added touch of realism, especially since there was no soundtrack or music really to speak of. A doomsday film quite unlike any other, which I think will make it stick out in cinema history.

Good to hear you liked it.  Lots of the reviews that I have read said that it didn't really live up to its hype.  Seems that there are lots of 'easter eggs' in the movie.  Got that off the scifi web-site.

I may just go and watch that flick this weekend.

A new James Bond movie (#22) is coming soon.  It will be called 'Quantum of Solace'.  James Bond fans rejoice!  :yey:

Rumours about the name had grown after fans noticed that film studio Sony had bought the domain name quantumofsolace.com.

But co-producer Michael Wilson said the name had only been decided "a few days ago", adding the story's start point would be "literally an hour after the last film left off".

Director Marc Forster is in charge of work on the movie, which is due for release on 7 November.

Read more about it.

Last night, I watched Mike Bassett: England Manager. And what a brilliantly funny movie that was. I am not sure how you would react if you don't care for football, but I would suggest that the jokes would not be lost. But then again, so much of it is the sort humour that would make a man laugh, and a women roll her eyes to the heavens and sigh. A good example; the England players (not the real ones, I must add, but obviously loosely based on one or two) are in the bath celebrating their qualification for the World Cup in Brazil:

Kevin Tonkinson: [naked in the pool] Here, lads we've got a jacuzzi
[farts, bubbling the water up; players laugh]
Kevin Tonkinson: And again
[farts again]
Kevin Tonkinson: Oh bollocks, I've shit meself!

Any-road, the crux of the story is that the current manager suffers a near fatal heart attack and as England have three games remaining for World Cup qualification, they need to get a replacement. So the bods at the FA sit round a table to mull over some names. It soon becomes apparent that not one England man is either fit for the job or indeed wants it. So they end up plumping for a manager from English football's second tier - Norwich City's manager, Mike Bassett (played by Ricky Tomlinson). By the skin of their teeth and aided by the most unlikely of events (Luxembourg beats Turkey - in Turkey), they qualify for Brazil. And so the story continues.

And we do get a few cameos of famous (and not so famous) football personalities, namely by Pele (who we see interviewed by Martin Bashir), Gaby Yorath and Barry Venison.

Good fun all round, is this one.

Just got home from watching RAMBO and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised... oddly. I was expecting some campy, cheesy 80's rehash and what I got was a DARK, serious, brutal (fucking brutal) war movie. granted the plot was minimal, but the action makes the other Rambo movies, well, what they were, a joke. Good movie, made me cry, but that's cause I'm emotional wreck right now, but still, I enjoyed it immensely.

I read a brief flash of a title review on Rambo and recall seeing the words 'sicko' there!  I guess guts and gore are a must in action and horror movies these days.

I watched Eastern Promises starring Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts.  I liked it.  There is plenty of gore in this one too, though it is mostly a psychological drama that keeps us guessing the identity and motivation of Viggo's character Nikolai, who keeps introducting himself as "only a driver".  We know this is false, but who is he exactly?

In essence, the movie is about Russian maffia in modern day London.  Real life incidence with that ex-KGB agent being poisoned in England and the resulting diplomatic disagreements between Russia and England accentuate this movie by giving us prior knowledge.

Apparently, Russian maffia is strong in London and one would never know just by going about one's business.  Nikolai portray's the seedy underworld well with his multitude of tattoos all of which stand for some criminal activity or an attitude he'd adopted to show his tough persona.  His close friend Kiril, the maffia boss' son, is definitely a drunk and some say a homosexual.

These perceived traits of Kiril is what gets the movie rolling from the start.  When Kiril sees that he's being ridiculed he has one of his closest friends killed very early in the movie.  This has many consequences until the very end.

Another important plot is Watts' character Anna delivering of a baby from a fourteen year-old mystery mother who dies upon delivery.  Anna comes to realize that the Russian maffia and its boss had a hand to play with this young, dead mother.  Until the near end, the viewer does not clearly understand whether Nikolai is out to help or hinder Anna in her quest for justice.

Giving up more of the movie would spoil it.  I suggest it as a rental.

The acting is superb, though Mortensen sometimes slurrs his Russian.  However, this could easily be in character as he speaks very low throughout the whole movie.  I've never seem a movie where Watts and Mortensen do not impress as actors.  I think Watts is the best actress today.

I saw it a while back in London.
I loved the naked fight scene. One of the best ever, very realistic.
Cool that Mortensen has his first Oscar nomination now! I don't know why but someone deleted my post about it in this very topic, without any particular reason. Can't find it!

Thanks for the feedback, Forostar.

V. Mortensen is a great actor.

I also saw 'Death Proof'.  This is a Quentin Tarantino movie so most of you can stop reading now.  That means you Onhell.  :D

The car chases are amazing, but the typically off-beat Tarantino endings ruin the movie.  If you do not care for the plot and do not mind the typical Tarantino stuff (long scenes in a single location, love of conversations), you'll love the action.

I think you just made the GRAVE mistake of mistaking me for Loosecannon who mistakenly thinks Tarantino films are boring. to SOME extent I agree, but for the most part I do not... and if I'm not mistaken I believe that Blackie also dislikes him. Tarantino, not LC, though maybe he dislikes LC to, but I could be wrong... ok ok I'll stop. :p

Looking back, it's Sneaky, LC and myself who dislike him. I'd go as far as to say that I hate him, but that might sound mean.

Wait, Deathproof...ahh, I get so confused with Tarantino movies...is this the one with Stuntman Mike and his stunt car? Or is it the one with the chick who has a machine gun for a leg? If its the one with Stuntman Mike I loved that movie (especially the ending!).
