NOW WATCHING

The film has been showed every year since the 80's on Swedish TV. I have no clue how it happened, or why, it just is. You can't not watch it.

Saw The Hateful Eight today in 70mm with the full "presentation"

Saw it on Wednesday in 70mm too. I thought it was excellent, though Samuel L. Jackson pretty much plays his character exactly the same as Jules in Pulp Fiction, which was an odd choice. But I have got to the point where I will pretty much watch anything with Walton Goggins in it.

I actually didn't see a huge similarity between the characters. The writing obviously lead him in a similar direction (i.e. lots of big speeches), but overall much more grounded than Jules. I guess he kind of played the whole movie like Jules in the final scene of Pulp Fiction. Honestly, I'm just amazed that only Tarantino is capable of getting such a great, non-phoned-in performance from Samuel L. Jackson.

I will pretty much watch anything with Walton Goggins in it.
I first saw Walton Goggins in Sons of Anarchy as the transsexual hooker they brought in for a one-off gag. The show got a lot of (deserved) criticism for the gag, and they brought Goggins back as a major love interest for one of the bikers in the final season, and it was well done and more than occasionally beautiful.

I'm looking forward to The Hateful Eight.

I started watching the new ITV series, Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands at the weekend. It wasn't outstanding, but quite big budget for a British TV series. It's loosely based on the legend of Beowulf, but with a lot more politics and intrigue. It looks very much like a slightly tamer pre-watershed version of Game of Thrones from the outset, and I can only guess that's the kind of formula they're aiming for. I'll stick with it and see how it turns out.

I finally got around to checking out Black Mirror, which I've been meaning to do for a while. I'm very glad I did. It reminds me a lot of The Twilight Zone; every episode is a completely separate story, with a different cast and everything. I've watched the first 3 episodes so far, about to check out the next right now.

I am currently circulating The Wire - Six Feet Under - True Blood with my wife. With the first two we are finishing the second seasons and we've been through about 6 episodes of the latter. And it's all pretty good, even if Wire stands head and shoulders above the other two (at least for me). It doesn't surpass the Sopranos (I'm getting the feeling nothing will ever top that), but so far it's better than both Oz and Breaking Bad, IMHO.

And this weekend we intend to see the new Tarantino. Since Django is probably my favourite movie by him (well, sharing the first spot with Reservoir Dogs), I'm very glad he decided to go in that western well once more.

Currently watching the Netflix 10 episode documentary Making A Murderer. Wow. Just Wow. Never been captivated by a documentary like this for quite some time. Must watch by everyone.

So I've seen H8ful 8. And it was good. Not best, but solid and somewhat different. Very bleak, too - in fact, probably Tarantino's bleakest film so far (with the possible exception of Reservoir Dogs), at times gut-wrenching (just as RD were), but also slightly overlong. I mean, I get the movie's supposed to be epic, what with it being filmed in Ultra Panavision 70 and everything, but the substance's really not enough in places. It was a bit tiring, after all. But still, I enjoyed it and I will definitely see it again, maybe on home video, though.

Liked the Morricone score and liked all the shout outs to Carpenter's the Thing (including the score! Does this mean it's been officially acknowledged Morricone actually did work on the Thing and that his soundtrack kicked ass? I hope so)

Do it! Once you've seen the first two episodes you just want to know how it all ends.
I'm currently half way through the documentary. I'll second this show as a must-watch. Without giving anything away, it really evokes a lot of anger at the incompetence/corruptness in the criminal justice system; at least in this particular case.

Over New Year's, I watched the first season of The Man in the High Castle with the lady. It's a series produced for Netflix based on a novel by Philip K. Dick about an alternate reality in which Nazi Germany and Japan won the war and occupied the US. It has a few shortcomings and a few weird inaccuracies such as the official name of Germany being "Greater Nazi Reich", but it's worth watching and I'm looking forward to the second season. It provides a very interesting vision and an intriguing mystery, to say the least.

I am 3 episodes into this, really well done so far ... good story (I never read the book), good acting, and shot really nicely ... it has a film-like quality to it. Streaming services and cable stations coming up with their own programming along with importing shows from other countries has so vastly improved the quality of TV versus 15+ years ago. There is certainly still plenty of crap, but there is a ton of good stuff as well.

Star Wars should be nominated for costume design too... Anyway, I hope it wins in its categories (especially sound). Fingers crossed for John Williams - not the best Star Wars soundtrack, but still extraordinary work. Besides - huge success of Mad Max, it's good to see that such a bold film is appreciated. I have a feeling The Revenant will dominate, though.

I have a feeling Mad Max is going to win a lot of the little categories, but I have seen every movie nominated for best picture, and it was my favourite movie of the year, as well as the best one.

Of those nominated for best picture, I've only seen The Martian and Room, and I think the latter is better.
I'm surprised The Danish Girls hasn't been nominated for more categories, but Eddie Redmayne definitely deserves another Oscar. Poor Leo... :(
