Not the best Bruce album by a long shot, but I was living in Perth (Western Australia) at the time, and I have fond memories of driving around listening to it really loudly.
Some of the material on AOB, TCW and (the metal of) TOS is just too good, but as a whole TMP is very consistent, interesting and quite solid imo, a potential favorite vibe. Despite its technical/writing flaws, it can ''rival'' (for me, as a whole) AOB because of a couple of weaker songs and even TOS (not by playing though), as difficult as it sounds and with unfinished songs. No fillers imo, like TCW (AOB ?). It's like BTP for a new century (with a bit more stronger ideas), the approach of some of the guitar work is similar. Skunkworks is different, not to mention the debut. The overall material of almost all is oddly evenly matched in a way.

Speed/power on Mistress, Wounds and probably Resurrection Men, unfortunately. Oh, and Ragnarok, live.
I agreeI think that Biff Byford is the one that fares the worst!

Because of the great and strong previous material. What do you mean?
3 slow songs to end an album is not a good idea, never will be, but in this case it kind of worked imo (despite Sonata being very specific song).About The Mandrake Project album I have to say that the album start to fail since Face in the mirror. I mean the last 3 songs of the album are really bad worked, finished, produced…
I wonder if the album could be like Skunkworks in the future, similar reaction. Comparing it with the debut is not serious. Maybe it wasn't that big of a surprise that after all this time (and the previous 3 albums), Bruce wanted a slightly different approach (like with BTP). I think he'll continue with that style. As with Maiden, I find the songs great live.I am glad you are finding things to enjoy in that album though.
