Nightwish - Yesterwynde

I am pleasantly surprised by it. The production fits. Yes, some parts are overlong, most of the symphonic ideas feel same-y and there are no solos at all again (which is not worse than Bruce's TMP), but the songs are heavier, more memorable, catchier and work very well as a whole album. Floor is great, Kai is great. I miss Marko. An album with a certain charm and I always appreciate and like such albums.

''Something Whispered Follow Me'' is a great song (love the chorus already, one of my favorite deep cuts), ''Hiraeth'' contains one of their best melodic passages, while ''The Ocean Of Strange Islands'', ''The Antikythera Mechanism'', ''The Children Of 'Ata'' and ''Spider Silk'' are some of their best material in a while imo. Too bad they won't tour it.

There are some songs that could be called weak or fillers (not many, mostly the ones with the ballad-y/calm parts), but all of them really help for the overall vibe of the album and are nice in their own way.

Thirty years of listening to metal and I still don't know how do you create a song like that.

EDIT: just now I've seen people who only acknowledge the first seven albums by the band to praise this as their best song nonetheless, because it's obviously enough to sway at least even some of the playclassics crowd. That's how strong my love that song is.

Fun fact - I might have caused the only occasion in history where this song (or any Maiden song, for that matter) has been played at the wedding that eventually resulted in a 100% Catholic, sacramental marriage.
Yes, it was because we got married in a civil manner and then both converted three years later, but still, I think it counts. :D

We've had 10-year anniversary of our wedding this July, in fact.
 

You know how it is. Judas is drubl, therefore it's time ... not for Blink-182 (whom I mostly dislike), but I Miss You in particular. I don't make the rules.

And I kinda like this one track anyway. Like finding a pearl in a trough. The atmosphere, the Orbisonesque structure, the music video... never thought these wankers would be able to do something this fine... kinda.
 

This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime transformative experiences that you never truly forget. The entire album is like that, but this final chefs-d'œuvre is the ultimate example for me. If nothing, Airto's drumming here has completely changed not just my understanding of drumming, but in a way, my understanding of music in general. The "dismantled" intro, the brooding and mysterious Sometime Ago... but primarily the vivacious and joyful La Fiesta. I know nothing else, nothing even remotely similar.

It's because of the great talent as a musician of Kai Hansen. You can instantly hear his guitar signature in every song, like in "Riding On Fire". :)

Nevertheless, Piet Sielck is a great composer too. ;) These two guys have done an amazing job on the first three records. :cool:

Given this two listens so far, pretty good, but don't think it's as good as their other two albums, there's too many tracks and they are mostly in a similar style. I've been listening to the 4 tracks that had already been released a lot, and they are probably the best stuff on the album, so that kind off takes the gloss of the rest of the tracks
