It turns out James Guthrie also produced Hell Bent for Leather. It seems I only like Guthrie's work with Pink Floyd - the metal albums he's produced just don't sound good to me.
All those albums share the same soft, bassy sound and have very prominent and 'thumpy' kick drums.
