It's true that he goes all out on the early records, he learns to control his voice a lot better later on, particularly in his solo stuff where he starts shaping it more to fit the storytelling of his horror stories and starts giving voices to the different charachters. Besides that though, those early Mercyful Fate albums are classic heavy metal! :)

Especially Melissa and Oath. Their best work are those two records and the first EP. Classic metal.
