I listened to those two Ayreon albums, and I’m not especially impressed or enamored by them. They’re definitely listenable, but they fall more into the “not really my cup of tea” category.
Personally, I need a bit less “progressive” and a bit more traditional heavy metal. I like the ambient passages, but I also need something to counterbalance them.
I prefer the first two Avantasia albums to this. And definitely Prequelle and Skeletá by Ghost.
Now I’m listening to The Human Equation by Ayreon, and I’m getting much the same feeling - perfectly listenable, but nothing too earth-shattering.
Then “Day Seven: Hope” kicks in. Not heavy, but maybe a little bit in the spirit of The Doors. That one spoke to me immediately. It touched something in my inner psyche right from the start. I like it very much - a little gem indeed.
Hmm… maybe it even wanders a little into Ghost territory.
I think I can pin down why this song affected me: I need drama in a song. I feel like the voices and characters in it are trying to convey something important to me.
There’s a real sense of theatricality here. That’s probably why it connected with me. As I said, I can hear a bit of Ghost in it, and also something of the first Avantasia album.

It is definitely bloated, but it also contains some (not many) great songs.

I never listened when it came out, as I was sick of the Black Album at that stage and the video and image change for Until it Sleeps was a red rag to a 16 year old.
But listening years later with an open mind it's a good album, with more going for it than anything they've done since. Usually Hammett only get's to play the solos on an album, so it's great to hear him contribute a different voice to the tracks for once on an album. Until It Sleeps, Hero of the Day, Bleeding Me, Mama Said and The Outlaw Torn, are great Metallica tracks and the rest is mostly solid.
