Orthodox or Catholic, two lungs of the same body, I'll endorse both.

NP:

Funny, we were filming at someone’s home today, and I was listening to Orthodox chants on the way there. And in their house, they had a whole array of icons and religious symbols exactly like the one in the video I posted in the corner of their living room. But this family is Jewish, so I started to wonder: are Jews Orthodox?

Weeeell... There are Orthodox Jews, but that's something quite a bit different than the Orthodox Church (a different religion, actually). And those definitely wouldn't have any icons. But Jews are both a nation and a religion. So I'd say either they are

- ethnically Jewish but Eastern Orthodox (or something similar, the East has about 20 different denominations or even Catholic sub-denominations - the so called Eastern Catholic Churches, which are pretty much the same as their non-Catholic brethen, but are at unity with the Catholic Church and recognize the Pope + all of these have some really similar iconography and art and everything, so it can be sometimes hard to tell just from that alone) or
- they might even actually be Jewish even in the religious way, but more on the liberal side, and they feel for and use this stuff "culturally". Like, you know, crosses on gangstas etc.

This seems to be saying that if the family are Eastern Orthodox, they would not have icons. The Christian Eastern Orthodox Church are extremely keen on Icons. In most Orthodox Churches there is an Iconostasis (a wall covered in icons, usually of the Holy Family) separating the main body of the Church from the sanctuary, where the most sacred parts of the liturgy are conducted.

In any case it sounds like this family are Jewish converts to the Christian Eastern Orthodox Church. Usually when someone says they are "Orthodox" they are referring to the Christian denomination.
The subject of the relationship between Judaism and Christianity (and the overlap) is a fascinating one.

The those in the second sentence was supposed to be related to the premise/main theme of the first sentence, that is Orthodox Jews. Plus the rest of my post implies this knowledge you mention as well. But I'll do my best in the future to keep comprehensibility even without the benefit of the intonation and stress of the spoken word.
