Nonsensical Maiden Lyrics

Hmm. I'm torn on this. I've used "just" in some of my own songs simply because it fills a percussive hole in the melody. Sometimes rhythm guides melody and if you have a lyric that fits really well, but needs one more syllable, why re-write the whole line when you can simply add a "just?"

It's not necessarily wrong, but it can sound a bit awkward.

Agreed. I think a lot of it also depends on genre. I primarily write folk/rock songs, in which a cavalier use of the word "just" does not usually sound as awkward as it does when placed in a heavy metal song.

I need to find examples, but I always associate the extensive use of 'just' with 80s pop. You're right, Mr K, it is (just) a handy word to drop into a song to (just) make the lyrics fit, but I (just) get the feeling it (just) gets dropped into a lot of songs purely for this purpose, and (just) stands out a mile once you're aware of it. :p

Guys, I spent three seconds coming up with that line, and I'm not a songwriter! The idea of this thread was to gently pick apart lyrics that don't really make sense, and "Infinity is hard to comprehend" makes as much sense as "It's hard to walk to the sun".

Indeed, for both are simply statements of (alleged) fact, and both score full marks for stating the completely bloody obvious. But if someone was writing a song about trying to walk to the sun, that line would have a plausible context. I suppose whether the line is nonsensical or not depends on how you interpret the rest of the song.

"Don't you think I'm a savior
Don't you think I could save you
Don't you think I could save your life"

I get it at first, but as this lyrical line is repeated the 754th time I think I've lost the meaning.
Maybe they should make an extended 30 minute version of this song and it would make sense again:applause:
