It's darker with very intelligent lyrics, but unfortunately it lacks the energy of other Maiden albums (Iron Maiden, Powerslave, 7th Son etc.). It's less epic songs too, and I think maybe they recorded too many songs for the albums. It would have been better with less songs at higher quality.

Up the Irons!
Dude, you hit the nail on the head. I like the Blaze stuff, but not as much as the Bruce stuff, and I could never pin down exactly why before. Lack of energy! The lyrics are great, the songwriting is great, but the performance seemed just a bit below par. Sure there's exceptions like Sign of the Cross or Futureal, but a lot of those songs just seemed flat.

Virus is a great example. Great writing, great lyrics, it's fantastic when I only think of it from an intellectual point of view. But there's another side to music - does it get pounding in your gut and your brain regardless of the "quality" of the writing? Virus sounds like it ought to, but it doesn't (at least for me). And that's the whole band's fault, not just Blaze.

Maybe it's time for a refresher course: I haven't actually listened to those 2 CDs all the way through in a long time. I play single tracks off them sometimes, but it's been 3 years since I really gave the whole albums a good listen. Maybe I should give them another chance, eh? You're right when you say it's not all Blaze's fault, even though his voice lacks energy too. Maiden was a bit tired by then, not having the energy and power of the 80ties. However, it all returned with Bruce and Adrian!

I agree MaidenSweden. It sure was great to have Bruce and Adrian back.

I think that the Blaze era was better than the Di'Anno era.

Nah, I think Di'Anno era has a lot more energy [!--emo&:P--]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

I don't know what you guys mean by "no energy"...I feel there is the proper amount of energy, Blaze's voice just conveys it in an entirely different manner than Bruce's or Paul's. When I hear Blaze screaming "Freedom!" it really moves me, which Bruce's voice doesn't when I hear him cry on RiR...or when Blaze howls on Sign of the Cross or The Edge of Darkness. And a recent favourite is When Two World Collide.

Kudos should also go to Blaze for keeping Maiden together...lets face it, based on what all the band members have said about the end of the FotD tour, if Bruce had tried to carry on Maiden likely would have imploded. It was a close run thing as it was, with Steve's divorce following on that.

When comparing albums, remember that the songs were written (with a few exceptions, like Invaders) for the particular singer. I can't imagine hearing The Educated Fool with Bruce or Paul! And to be honest, I'm glad I didn't have to hear The Number of the Beast with Blaze...I think it would lose something. But I can't wait till I get to see Blaze in concert, even if just to hear Sign of the Cross and Virus!

Blaze on No of the Beast... [!--emo&--]/rolleyes.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'rolleyes.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

That's no way! [!--emo&--]/wacko.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'wacko.gif\' /][!--endemo--]
