Nicko at NAMM!

Well of course they probably could still do it but they'd be burned out after a gig, yet alone a whole tour! And they already look rather knackered after a gig today, even if the songs are slowed down slightly.

"I can’t believe we played that song that fast.’ We still have a lot of energy, but as a player I’ve realised we couldn’t play at that speed today and make it work.

“We were younger and it was a lot more crazy. We’re a bit more refined with where we go with tempos now. There are still nights when I go a bit quick and the rest of the band moan.

The bit about Nicko making the others moan might be true or just a case of his humor. I'm sure he is also happy that they have slowed down ;)

Thank you! I don't think I ever read that. It tells me that Nicko is more honest than some others in the band because they told that the speed was getting ridiculous (which now seems like bullshit to me; the truth is that they have a more literal problem playing it).

Yeah they're not as fast as they used to be and they probably wouldn't be able to hold the songs together as well if they charged through them like they did on tours in the 80s. Yeah, he is pretty honest about it. On some of the songs it is not even that noticeable.

I also read a recent interview in which Nicko said that he and Steve cannot do as if they were still young lads, and that they had to slow things down. Don't know if this is a proof of weakness.

I wouldn't call it a weakness. It is just a fact that they need to look after themselves more. I mean, they're probably older or around the same age as most of our parents :p I am trying to imagine my dad jumping around on stage like that.

Yeah but your dad probably looks older, too!! It has a healthy side, mentally & physically staying restless. Anyway thanks for the posts!

Just honest about their current capabilities or limits, then. Nicko is the first who's not beating around the bush, regarding this subject (slowing down). Kudos to him.

This is absolutely true. It keeps them in good shape

Back when they did the original Seventh Son tour the band must have been around their late 20s, early 30s? And now they are back in their late 50s doing the same tour. I don't think they would have thought that back then :D

Depending on the song, I find some bands speed things up too much when they play live, and end up making it sound bad. I've thought Bruce sounded a bit stretched in some performances, particularly more recent live performances of the Trooper, and the Live at Abbey Road version of Hallowed.
But yes, Nicko has the most energetic job, and regardless of age, you can knacker yourself drumming at a million miles per hour

Never noticed neither. Then, its a really fantastic performance, because he is really good, like all the band.

Bruce was not that great really. Clearly in a difficult part of the tour. The way he catches breath surely doesn't look too good.
