New Metallica Song

Now that the gremlins have gone holidaying, I'll post my views.

Essentially, this song comes as a welcome return after St. Anger.  It sort of reminds me of the Load-era material, but it's somehow better.  I like the intro melodies, and that solo is pretty good as well.  If the rest of the album is in any way similar, I will be making very interesting noises upon its release :yey:

I have to say this song sort of gives me the feeling that they are bereft of a bit of originality. For sure, I enjoyed it, I really liked the double bass drum bits (always can we rely on Lars for that), but it lacked the grab that songs like "For Whom.." etc gave me on the first listen.

I will reserve proper judgement when the new album is released.

After quite a few listens, I will now judge the song properly:

It sounds like a cross between "Wherever I May Roam" and "St Anger"... a groovy riff but there is still a vibe around it that I don't like... it is now the job of Rick Rubin to remove the SA vibe and give us another Black Album, or even a MoP at the best.  I think the final product may lie somewhere between the two but it's early days yet ;)

Anywhere between the two would do for me.

You mean you want another And Justice For All?
For song writing, yes. Production, no. Is the short answer.

Well, at least if they give the bass a bit more, then ..And Justice would be good.

I like the production on AJFA... it's fresh, compared to every other generic thrash album out there... the clicky drums and sharp guitars build up a great ferocious sound.

And Metallica wrote the book on generic thrash. What they did, others copied.

My brother saw them about two days ago at the Nova Rock Festival in Austria and said they kicked ass! Maybe they're on the road to recovery... that would be so cool, it would show that a good band can re-emerge from it's ashes....

...and maybe I'll be asked to be Kirk's roadie on their new tour ;).  Seriously, I wouldn't put your hopes up too much, mainly because Metallica are probably not going to go back to their 'roots'.  They played all the thrash stuff for years, and the hard rock stuff for the past 10 years, so they'll probably move on to something else.  I would (at best) expect another Load from them...but in a good way!  In a 'Ain't my Bitch' kind of way-not exactly 'Creeping Death', but still good to listen to.

I heard that Metallica will be releasing its new album next year.
Have you guys heard of this news?

Upon visiting Wikipedia, I discovered that Metallica have released many similar 'albums'.  A Matter Of Life And Death by Iron Maiden is another example of an album.  Have you heard it?  I wonder if it was played live.

Unique way of saying yes

Well, we have to respect their musical exploration, but it would be nice if there was some nice thrashy bits in the album, something in vein
to hit the lights, seek and destroy, with a touch of fade to black. I'm not implying they should sound like that, but a bit of returning to roots won't
hurt, after all, it was thrash masterpieces. A song with the energy of whiplash, melody of Sanitarium and maybe an opening of Eye of the Beholder? Eh, That's asking too much  :innocent:

Nevertheless, this album is in my waiting list.

How about something that's not so appallingly bad that it can be referenced by the phrase 'that album' said with a mixture of disgust, horror and nausea?

Well, with fans divided over Metallica's old school vs Napster dispute and sellout allegations, I hope that it won't be St.Anger MK2

I don't think that at all. Metallica aren't idiots...they saw how badly St. Anger went down...they only played a few songs from the album live, and (as far as I know), it's been more or less phased out from the live set now.

Actually, that's a good question.  What St. Anger songs other than Frantic and the title track were played live?

Anyway, I think we'll see a return to the thrash/hard-rock combination of Load/Reload...which could be interesting, if pulled off well.  I'd go and see them live, anyway, as they are still a very good live act; no matter how shit their live performance has gotten in the last few years, it's still a lot better than many other bands.

Remember last summer, when they played the entirety of Master Of Puppets live at a few shows? I watched a bunch of YouTube vids from those shows, and it seemed they genuinely enjoyed it. I'm hoping that experience reminded them that old-school progressive thrash is cool fucking music, and maybe it will tilt them back in that direction.

The main reason I'm looking forward to the next album, however, is Robert Trujillo. That motherfucker can play some bass and then some. Check out the Infectious Grooves albums if you want to hear his all-out badness. Obvious, Metallica will never be as funky as the I.G.s, but Trujillo is by far the most technically skilled bassist Metallica has ever had. (Yes, he's better than Cliff was.) It remains to be seen whether he'll really get to stretch out on bass - or will James make him double the guitars, like he did to Newsted on Justice?
