Metallica mention Maiden in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame speech

The main problem: Being in the Hall of Fame(any kind) does not mean being your taste.

This is Maiden forum ^ Maiden aren't in Hall of Fame => Hall of Fame isn't good

Yet another year, another class of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, and still no Maiden. At this point it's almost cooler that they're not in. Although what good is a collection of rock and/or roll memorabilia without Eddie?

Nice point. :)

I think its safe to say most of us here are open minded enough not to follow that line.

I agree with the sentiments that it seems rather pointless to have a Hall of Fame when no one pays attention to it, neither the general public nor music enthusiasts. The problem of diluting such awards applies to nearly everything though, and music especially is such a taste-based world that its never going to have a definitive way of ranking itself that everyone agrees with.

As for Metallica - meh, not the shining beacon of originality, musicianship or personality are they? Good but not amazing. Two albums I like all the way through the rest I barely like. Personally I find them a tad too repetitive at times, sometimes they become way too predictable. But they are good, just vastly over-rated like any popular band really.

But Newsted always had the best spirit. He was a fan who got to play with his heroes, and he never forgot that.

I don't get it...
I mean I've heard that before, but Newsted has the same age with them
and been into industry since the same period with them.
How Metallica could be his heroes ?

You can be a fan of someone who is of your age, you know. And Metallica were successful and legendary before Newsted joined them. I don't really see the problem.

Be fan, I can understand it, but 'heroes' ?? And it's not just SMX that mention it... I've seen it elsewhere,
I think in Owens official page. I'll make it more clear :

He (Owens) described how rare is someone to joint his idols /heroes, like him and Newsted did.
Bur hey, I cannot compare Owens with Newsted, I can not even imagine it.

I mean Owens was in a Priest covers band, he nicknamed himself 'Riper'
while Newsted was making his own music in the same time with Metallica.
Newsted & Metallica belong to the same generation, while Owens could be Halford's child.

I think it's more clear now...

I think you're confusing the expression "childhood hero/idol", or rather, missing the first word out. You can idolise someone younger than you, its just more common to idolise someone older because seeing someone as your hero is seen as something we do when we are younger. Its not impossible for people to be inspired by those the same age though, there's no rules to how you become inspired or impressed.

:offtopic:

Not exactly: When Owens did audition, he did such an excellent performance of Ripper, immediately after he arrived in England, that the other Priest members gave him the nickname on the spot.

I was just going to say that!  :D

I dislike people who hate Lars, saying "All he cares about is money", and there's a lot of this crap on youtube... and I don't believe it. And Napster had it coming, they used their music with no permission...

Go on and play "Dyers Eve", "Battery" or "Fight Fire With Fire" before you say "Lars sucks!"

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Metallica died with Cliff.

I disagree. .. And Justice For All is a great album. Maybe some songs go on a bit too long, but there are so many good riffs on that album ...

I have to agree with that cliff statement.
One and some songs in the black album are good, but other then that they changed for the worse.

Then again I don't even like their old material that much, I only love maybe 4 songs from them.

Just saw them on time warp though, they looked cooler in slow motionXD

My point is that Cliff was the leader of the band, the big brother. He may have not been a major songwriter, but he was the cool guy in the band, the one they looked up to. A big part of Metallica died with Cliff. Call it change, call it what you will, but Metallica was not as good without Burton. And yes, I know Justice and the Black album had some great songs.

Well, not actually, he had some great ideas though... I have nothing against Cliff, but James was the core of the band. He wrote many songs, produced many good melodies and so on... and I think you should not judge members how much cool they are...

My point is that James is the leader, if he died instead of Cliff, Metallica would have disbanded...

Yet Cliff was great and much respect to him, but James was the main gear...
