While "Laut und Hart" definitely is a bad song, I was a bit surprised how much hate it got from (former) fans. It is not worse than any of the crap they released on the last 2 EPs. Actually, I found those EPs even worse. Sword of the Highlands and Immortal are the worst shit I can imagine, even Sabaton or Doro are better (and it is very hard to be worse than those).
The last great Manowar masterpiece was Triumph of Steel. Louder Than Hell was the beginning of the decline, although it still was a good album with some hits. Warriors was the first major disappointment, even though it still had 2 great songs. But it was the first one where the crap outweighed the good stuff by a mile. It was also where the gimmick bullshit started. Manowar appearing in trash TV shows and shit. It was also the first tour where they sucked live. It was like a cringe fest. The audience had changed too.
Gods of War was a joke, one mediocre song, the rest was simply forgettable. Dull, calculated, uninspired, bereft of any atmosphere or dynamic. Hard to beleieve this was from he same band as Hail To England.
Admittedly, Lord of Steel and the Thunder in the Sky EP were a little better. But well, pretty much everything is better than Gods of War, so this wasn't really something good. Lets not speak about the pathetic re recordings of KOM and BH. Lets just pretend they don't exist.
In 2007 Manowar did one last cool thing: they did a promo release party in my hometown for one of their stupid DVDs. It was for the press, but 200 fans could get in for free! First come, first serve. I was there and got in. Several 100 others did not. We had to watch a cringeworthy, hour long promo trailer / making of film for that DVD (not even the DVD itself). When it was finally over, the screen wall moved aside, and Manowar were there, launching into a one-hour suprise gig in that small club. No intro. No stupid interludes. No talking. No harleys, no tits, no pyros, no bullshit. Just one hour classic after classic without any breaks. No new songs, only stuff from the 80s and 2 songs from LTH. Eric Adams was drunk, but in a good way. It made him authentic and he still sang like a god. He forgot the words to the Hail and Kill intro, so he let a fan sing it. Scott wasnt there, so Rhino played session drums. It was so much better than their awful official gigs.
After that, I decided to never go to a Manowar show ever again, because I knew that all following shows will just be disappointing. Rather end with a highlight. That's why I havent seen them live ever since.
Today, it is a no-brainer anyway. Sure, they are very fit for some guys in their 70s. Kudos for that. But they are old geezers nonetheless, and they can't do it anymore. Can't blame them, it is normal. But my stance is: when you cant do it anymore, dont do it. Especially not for 140 Euro per ticket.
