Maiden's Song set success

Funny thing about Can I Play With Madness-- one of my original fav's from maiden, but I've heard it live twice (I think), and on a few live ablums, and I really don't like it live.  Love it studio, tho.

I could do with more SSOASS tunes live, tho.

I'm actually the exact opposite.  I hate CIPWM in studio, but really like it live.

My suggestion would be to NEVER play RTTH again, and substitute it with some random rarely (or never) played song at each venue.

Never happen, Deano - at least the "random" bit. Maiden doesn't do random. Even if the band could handle it musically (which they likely can), their stage show - lighting, pyro, etc - is programmed to the expected songlist.

Of course this is still a lazy excuse. Dream Theater are one example of a band that travels with lighting cues programmed for all their stuff, and can play any song whenever they want.

But DT came of age in the computer era and seem easily adapatable to new tech. Maiden is old school. They were touring the world already when MIDI was brand new. Program all the lighting? That's not how it was done in the 70s, so that's not how Steve is gonna do it today.

I even recall Adrian saying he prefers the wires to wireless with his guitar.  They're really old school. :)

There's good reason though. Wireless anything can produce unwanted feedback and if the batteries on the reciever die or it malfunctions mid song, you're fucked. You don't have those issues with wired equipment.

Yeah, but nearly all bands use it.  So if there were real issues with the reliability, it wouldn't be so widespread.  Besides, Steve uses wireless.

Exactly... BTW, the Croatian IMFC did an interview with Dave Beazley, better known as Dave Lights, who handled Maiden's light show up until Somewhere on Tour. Since then, he has worked with Prince, Madonna, Dio, and he was the one who arranged the light show for New Year's eve 2000 in Greenwich, so he can be considered quite an authority on the subject. He said that he, still today, controls his light show manually, doesn't believe in pre-programmed stuff because, as he said, it can never be as precise and "human".

What I'm saying is that if Maiden's light show was controlled manually, they could play whatever the hell they wanted, every night a different set - if they wanted to. But I think that they simply aren't willing to. Why, I don't know. Hell, even the Rolling Stones, now in their late 60s, play different sets each night, they're an even better example as opposed to Dream Theater who don't have such an elaborate stage show.

Imagine what a treat it would be to collect Maiden bootlegs if each show had a slightly altered setlist, instead of the same songs and same speeches at the same spots...

If the equipment is worth it's money, you're right, but I've been to a couple of shows where the opening band had issues with their wireless recievers, the issue either got fixed or they simply grabbed another guitar.

Or, if they were unwilling to go all out, they could do their sets like Blind Guardian- in a 18 or so song set, have about 12 set in stone and then have 6 different ones each night.  That way they could put in a wide variety of stuff in the "extra" songs.
