THIS IS A POWER RANKING GAME. The albums are arranged in the poll from best to worst, with the top seeded album being the top ranked album. I seeded the albums based on two facts: how many lists it appeared on, and my general understanding of this board's tastes after being here for 15 years. This way we don't have to spend multiple rounds moving an album like Brave New World to the top, it's already there unless voters decide to knock it off the top spot.

Essential Questions:
How do you knock albums off the top spot? If you feel like an album is ranked too low, vote for that album. Any album that receives a significant plurality of votes (this number will be fluid and based on participation) will move up a slot. If you like the list as is, vote for the top album.

How often does this update? I will look at the numbers roughly every 24 hours and move albums accordingly. You can vote for as many albums as you want and you can vote whenever the poll resets. After a week, I will close the poll and we will move on to the next year. This will take us to mid December with the finals wrapping up right at the new year.

How were albums selected? I would say 95% of the albums that will appear in this game were sourced from Maidenfans lists. Every album that was submitted will appear in the game. For years that have a lot of duplicates (2000 being one), I filled in the list with other acclaimed albums. Many years surprisingly had close to all unique albums, with 2014, 2020, and 2023 having only one duplicate each. No year featured an entirely unique list of albums. No Maidenfans nominated albums were seeded lower than an album I pulled from an outside source.

Do I need to listen to every album here? Not necessarily, but I would highly encourage it! You have a week to vote and the voting will update every day (so you can vote every day or you can vote once a week or whatever you want). Everybody has unlimited votes. I think you will get more out of this game if you listen to the albums you're not familiar with and see if you can find any new favorites.

My favorite album isn't here! You had 7 months to send me a list!!!

I want to thank everybody who participated. I received 17 lists and 250+ albums! Most years had quite a variety of material and it made me appreciate the diversity of taste around here. I'm really excited to dig into each list I got and I am going to do my best to listen to every album. With that being said, let's get started with...

Year MMXIII
  1. The Ocean - Pelagial
  2. Ghost - Infestissuman
  3. Ayreon - Theory of Everything
  4. Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing
  5. Alter Bridge - Fortress
  6. Battle Beast - Battle Beast
  7. Saxon - Sacrifice
  8. Darkthrone - The Underground Resistance
  9. Haken - The Mountain
  10. Clutch - Earth Rocker
  11. Buckethead - The Pit (Pike 36)
  12. Avatarium - Avatarium
  13. Cathedral - The Last Spire
  14. Powerwolf - Preachers of the Night
  15. Black Sabbath - 13
Unlike the last couple years, there are some huge albums on this list. The top seed was a surprise to me, but The Ocean has been one of Metal's most acclaimed bands in the 2010s despite not much talk about them around here. I'll be curious to see how they perform, but I also feel like there is quite a bit of competition. Ghost, who's debut was absent in 2010, makes their debut in this game and are sure to be a juggernaut. While this isn't their most popular album, I'll be curious to see how their heavier less poppy older material holds up. Theory of Everything, The Raven That Refused to Sing, and The Mountain are massive albums in prog circles and I'll be curious to see if they hold up at all on here. For my money, The Mountain is by far the #1 album on this list.

Other albums of note include Black Sabbath's swan song 13. This album wasn't nominated and also didn't do particularly well in the Sabbath rankings, but still a Black Sabbath album can be quite formidable so we'll see. Buckethead has been notably absent this game and comes in with what is, in my opinion, kind of a random pick. But it's a decent entry in the Pike series and deserves at least an honest listen. We also have some late stage albums from Saxon and Darkthrone that I will be watching with great interest.

Preachers Of The Night is probably still the best album from Powerwolf’s later power metal style. Worth a listen if you haven’t heard it.

2013 is weak for me.

  • Sacrifice - classic and heavier NWOBHM, what's not to like. It's a consistent album of theirs, a couple of the songs are weaker, but the overall material is solid.
  • Battle Beast - their style and vocals are very likeable, this album's style is classic metal/WASP. I would say that 5 of the song are not good per se, but the rest are enough.
  • Fortress - I enjoy Alter Bridge style, it reminds me of Psycho Motel.

Black Sabbath's 13 is not my favorite style of theirs, Powerwolf's music is worth it but I'm not a fan of the vocalist, Ghost are specific.

I know, I know, I could've submitted it, but even still - no Sunbather is crazy. One of the defining metal albums of the 2010s.

Arguably not a Metal album. :dancinggeek:

We got a lot of submissions for this year! I only had room for one un-nominated album and felt that Sabbath was the most appropriate.

Other than Battle beast, I had a hard time to pick anything else. Gave a vote to Theory of everything and The raven that refused to sing (it's not metal by any means, don't know if that was any criteria)
