I voted for Opeth, which I concur deserves to win this year by a mile, although I have a lot of time for Horror Show. Which has weaknesses, but remains one of my more favourite Iced Earth albums.

It was close, but we have a second year in a row where the top seeded album ends up holding the slot. I am very impressed with Kamelot and Avantasia taking the #2 and #3 slots over far more discussed and well known albums around here. It seems like people were willing to be open minded toward lesser known works! I for one ended up enjoying The Metal Opera a lot more than I thought I would. I've really enjoyed everything I've heard from Tobias Sammet's projects between this game and the GMSC/GMAC, seems like I might need to take a deep dive soon. On the other hand, I just don't get Kamelot. I've tried a lot but I find their music to be quite generic, which makes the #2 slot feel very inappropriate but that's just me. I think Terria and Jane Doe were done a bit dirty, but otherwise it's a decent result to me.

There weren't as many massive jumps compared to 2000, where a couple non-nominated albums ended up jockeying for the top slot. In this realm, the big winner was Toxicity which knocked out a couple user nominated albums but then had a pretty clear ceiling that it struggled to break through. With a couple more rounds I could see it going down a place or two. Of the user nominated albums, Emperor and Lost Horizon were roundly rejected. I'm kinda surprised about Emperor in particular, seems like a pretty big fall from grace for the black metal legends, but again Maidenfans doesn't really do extreme metal outside a few exceptions (namely Opeth, clearly).

I absolutely love The Metal Opera. It's one of the best concept albums ever in my opinion. The songs blend so well together, and it's full of great performances that really stand out.
