THIS IS A POWER RANKING GAME. The albums are arranged in the poll from best to worst, with the top seeded album being the top ranked album. I seeded the albums based on two facts: how many lists it appeared on, and my general understanding of this board's tastes after being here for 15 years. This way we don't have to spend multiple rounds moving an album like Brave New World to the top, it's already there unless voters decide to knock it off the top spot.

Essential Questions:
How do you knock albums off the top spot? If you feel like an album is ranked too low, vote for that album. Any album that receives a significant plurality of votes (this number will be fluid and based on participation) will move up a slot. If you like the list as is, vote for the top album.

How often does this update? I will look at the numbers roughly every 24 hours and move albums accordingly. You can vote for as many albums as you want and you can vote whenever the poll resets. After a week, I will close the poll and we will move on to the next year. This will take us to mid December with the finals wrapping up right at the new year.

How were albums selected? I would say 95% of the albums that will appear in this game were sourced from Maidenfans lists. Every album that was submitted will appear in the game. For years that have a lot of duplicates (2000 being one), I filled in the list with other acclaimed albums. Many years surprisingly had close to all unique albums, with 2014, 2020, and 2023 having only one duplicate each. No year featured an entirely unique list of albums. No Maidenfans nominated albums were seeded lower than an album I pulled from an outside source.

Do I need to listen to every album here? Not necessarily, but I would highly encourage it! You have a week to vote and the voting will update every day (so you can vote every day or you can vote once a week or whatever you want). Everybody has unlimited votes. I think you will get more out of this game if you listen to the albums you're not familiar with and see if you can find any new favorites.

My favorite album isn't here! You had 7 months to send me a list!!!

I want to thank everybody who participated. I received 17 lists and 250+ albums! Most years had quite a variety of material and it made me appreciate the diversity of taste around here. I'm really excited to dig into each list I got and I am going to do my best to listen to every album. With that being said, let's get started with...

YEAR MMII (2002)
I can already tell this is going to be a prog dominated year. Symphony X, Dream Theater, and Opeth all have highly regarded albums, although Opeth's album was not nominated, leading to a low seeding. On the topic of non-nominated albums, I expect this to be similar to 2000 where, despite nobody nominating them, a few low seeded albums are going to jump up quite a bit and leap frog some favorites. I'm not sure if Symphony X has this locked down as much as Maiden and Opeth did, but I do think the top slot is The Odyssey's to lose. Ironically, I think most of the competition is going to come from some of the lower seeded albums.

To me, this is the first great year for the 21st century. Lots of all timers from a pretty large pool of talent. Lots of different subgenres and eras are represented here. I also feel like you get a pretty strong sense of where the next decade is going to go from some of these albums. A formative year to be sure.

1) Holy hell this year is stacked!
2) Am I to understand from the seeding that nobody nominated Century Child?!?!
3) I think you missed my nomination :( (The Sham Mirrors)

The Odyssey deserves to win this round, and heartily.

Also voting for Century Child and Deliverance, as both deserve to be in the top 3.

The Glass Prison is the best song featured in this round not written by Michael Romeo or Mikael Akerfeldt, even if the rest of the album is meh.

I actually rank Killing The Dragon at the bottom of Dio’s albums (far above Strange Highways or Angry Machines, but still the worst of his “average” albums). It doesn’t have a single 10/10 song. The first four songs are all good, Throw Away the Children is good, but the rest is pretty bad.

Where are you on Magica? I don't remember you commenting on it in the 2000 rounds.

I have a soft spot for Killing the Dragon as I got to see Dio live during this period, it was a formative moment for a burgeoning headbanger. The live DVD from that era, I think it was called Evil or Divine, is also quite good. I feel like Dio didn't get a chance to really hit a second wind in the 00s like a lot of his metal peers did, but this feels like a getting back to business moment after a decade or so of being all over the place.

My review of my own nominee, Luca Turilli’s Prophet Of The Last Eclipse, goes into a lot more detail; but suffice it to say that this bouncy sci-fi power metal album is a unique beast with consistently great songwriting.

If you want something simple but perfectly executed, try “The Age Of Mystic Ice”. If you want a giant power metal chorus, try “War Of The Universe”. In the mood for a bizarre epic? Go for the title track. But you really can’t go wrong with anything on here if you like this style of music.

Also dropping a vote for Symphony-X and a pity vote for Blaze’s best solo album.

Same here as far as nostalgia. Killing the Dragon was technically my Dio album, it just came out after I had heard all of his earlier material. I remember the era and shows fondly, but I just don’t think the material holds up.

I actually really like Magica. It’s definitely bloated and silly, but I’d rank it right in the middle of his discography.

Couldn’t agree more. Title track is one of the best songs of all time.

Possibly. Both albums have quite a few filler moments.

I actually think Blind Faith is just as strong, and I’m also partial to The Great Debate. But yes, the rest of the album is painfully average to my ears, which is ironic since it was the album that got me into Dream Theater.

Remedy Lane is by far my favourite of that list followed closely by Blaze. (I still should give that Symphony X album a try though!)
It´s really Pain Of Salvation´s career pinnacle imo. The album itself is even among my favourites of all time.

Votes:

  • Crimson Thunder - one of those albums that are all killer, no filler. A true HammerFall and power metal classic. A true favorite of mine.
  • Century Child - symphonic metal classic, almost no weak songs. Nightwish at some of their best with some big songs. Love it.
  • Tenth Dimension - Blaze continued the strong songwriting with his 2nd solo album. Again, almost all songs are good. His years in Maiden definitely helped him.
  • Prophet Of The Last Eclipse - I'm not familiar with Luca Turilli's discography, but I will always enjoy such quality power metal. Every song gives you something, even if it can sound same-y. It reminds me of Stratovarius in a way.

As for the others: I appreciate Rhapsody Of Fire, Symphony X is specific (but I guess not a whole album for me), while the best material from Magica and Killing The Dragon would make a good Dio album.

A great year for prog indeed, and no Celestrial entrance:nonono:

Gave my vote for Remedy lane (THE best album ever?), The odyssey, Century child, Power of the dragonflame and Tenth dimension. Didn’t see the Luca Turilli one until now. Still remember well buying all these when I was 16/17

Definitely going to vote to staple The Odyssey to the top of the list. Other selections: Blind Guardian, Pain of Salvation, Rhapsody, Opeth.
