Maiden Tour 2014 (NO SPOILER TAGS, ENTER AT OWN RISK)

Really wish they had dropped Midnight for this leg, I mean does anybody look forward to seeing this song anymore? It's sort of just there...

Also on that point, when was the last time they didn't play Midnight. Would I be right in thinking it's been present in every tour since the Bruce & Adrian reunion?
I don't think it was on the Dance of Death tour, The first history tour and the first leg of the Final Frontier Tour

I wouldn't mind if they dropped Midnight. Swap it with Infinite Dreams! Put The Clairvoyant back in and get rid of The Evil That Men Do.

Oh the flights of fantasy, it'll never happen.

I would've liked to have seen Heaven Can Wait put back in.

Yeah, I do not dislike it, I would rather see something else. Compared to some other bands I follow Maiden does a great job of switching up the setlists though.

Correct, between leg 1 of TFF and the first round of the ME tour, I think there were only 4 songs in common .. Running Free, NotB, FotD, and IM not really too bad. I think it is 3 years in a row of ME that makes the set lists seem more stale than normal

Not really. It's the fact that ME is basically Somewhere Back In Time part II.

ME 2012/13: 11 songs in common with SBIT 2008, 10 in common with SBIT 2009
ME 2014: 11 songs in common with SBIT 2008, 12 in common with SBIT 2009

Yes, they're covering similar eras, but when Steve says it's "and 86-88 sort of vibe" and Nicko says it's for "fans who weren't born when SIT or SSOASS came out" and they go out and do one SIT tune and mostly a bunch of other earlier 80s stuff, it doesn't really hold water.

I can't really believe anyone is shocked/surprised at the Setlist as after all this is the 2nd (2014) leg of the Maiden England Tour that they kicked off last year? So had they changed things around too much it would be a different tour altogether. Lets face it the band are not in a position to do 100+ dates a tour now so splitting it over 2 years is probably the best way of letting as many people see it as possible?

Rod says" this is the last time a lot of these songs will be played live" so surely instead of bitching we should be enjoying the fact that we have a chance to see them one last time?

Yes they might not be the most adventurous when it comes to doing different songs but Wrathchild was last played in 2010, Sanctuary in 2009 and Revelations in 2008 (I think) so it has been a few years since we've seen these live.

Hey it's all a matter of opinions I know and we will never be 100% happy but my daughter showed me the twitter feed for #screamformebarcelona(?) and the comments were all positive with many saying it was the best gig they had ever seen.

Personally I can't wait for Sonisphere even if I will be seeing Trooper, NOTB, FOTD, RTTH etc for the umpteenth time. For me Maiden have always been the best live band around and it will be a very sad day indeed when they finally call it quits.

Of course I'm still glad, and feel lucky that Maiden are still touring. A couple of points:

The phrase "last time we'll play these songs live" has been used in 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2012. Yes, they probably won't play Seventh Son or The Prisoner again, but you can be sure we'll still get NOTB/RTTH/FOTD/Wasted Years/Running Free/TETMD/CIPWM etc.

What disappoints me is the fact that they are ignoring so many great songs from the 80s that could be equally as pleasing to casual fans as to those of us here: Infinite Dreams, Icarus, Stranger in a Strange Land, Killers, 22 Acacia Avenue, and others. On the first history tour, they played nothing but the albums that were covered, and unearthed about 8 rare tunes that hadn't been heard in years. In 2008 there were around 5. In 2012 all they can manage is The Prisoner, Seventh Son (which is a given), and ATSS (which is completely out-of-context), and then all the same tunes that we got on the previous 80s tour.

Fair points well made and tbh I do pretty much agree with you. However most bands have 5 or 6 songs that they always seem to do live. I've seen Metallica numerous times and even though they will change it up much more than Maiden ever do, they've still done, Nothing Else, One, Sandman, Seek & Destroy and Master of Puppets every time.

Maybe as Maiden are getting on a bit (I mean that with the upmost respect) there are numerous songs that they just can't handle live anymore so they stick to the tried and tested?

I saw them in Dublin in 2010 when the set was mostly post 2000 stuff and the amount of people moaning as we came out because they didn't do The Trooper, RTTH, CIPWM etc, so I suppose they feel they sometimes can't win?

Actually, I'm (mostly) happy about the changes (of course considering I've also attended the last year gig):

ATSS -> Revelations - Thumbs up. Although I like ATSS it really shouldn't be in the setlist (well, FOTD shouldn't be too, but it's 'Arry's pet song so...) I'm glad I have heard it live last year, but never having heard Revelations live, it being slightly better song and considering it really fits the theme more...

The Clairvoyant -> Wrathchild - Thumbs down. Well, the tour is called Maiden England... Not only is The Clairvoyant significantly better song, but also rarer and Wrathchild is IMHO slightly overplayed. I understand the mental processes behind this decision (give the occasional fan what he wants) and although I wholeheartedly disagree, it's no disaster. Wrathchild is a solid tune.

Running Free -> Sanctuary - Thumbs up. I'm probably in the minority here, but although it might not be such a good closer, Sanctuary is much better song (more interesting, although not as catchy) and rather underplayed. Considering they already have Phantom in the setlist and the probability of hearing Remember Tomorrow, Transylvania, Another Life, Killers, Purgatory or Twilight Zone nears zero, such selection from the early days is not bad.

However, I would really appreciate if the tours were truly built around the concept. I don't see why Somewhere BIT tour has next to no SIT tunes, why ME tour is progressively stripped of more and more SSOASS tunes and instead we are given again and again and again songs from the early days. And of course, even on the history tours, we will hear FOTD, because to Steve it's the quintessential Maiden. Shit, for a chance to hear Loneliness, CSIT, Infinite Dreams, Sea of Madness or even Still Life (which was on the original ME video) I would give up my right arm - and that's only naming songs they've already played live! Why couldn't they again?

But nevermind - this Sunday - Maiden in Brno!!! YEAH!!! Seventh Son rides again! :rocker: :shred: :edmetal:

The band had a really good day at work on Saturday - they made a great show - but I miss Hallowed. I really, really hope it is back for the next tour.

This. The history tour that stayed most true to its era was Early Days. Granted, it wasn't perfect (I'm sure many would've preferred Children of the Damned, Still Life, and To Tame A Land to Drifters, Another Life and Wrathchild), but it was a wholehearted celebration of the era it covered. The era SBIT covered was somewhat wider, but had no huge omissions (aside from Icarus), rather it included a lot of repeat tunes, and some that didn't really belong (I'm looking at YOU Fear of the Dark...). Maiden England seems to be a further extrapolated version of this.

@Forostar

Regarding Smith/Gers and Evil that men do, whenever it was played since 1999, excluding current Maiden England tour, it was Eddie robot time also.
Might have something to do with it. Adrian stated that he doesn't mind Eddie on stage if he doesn't interfere much, I think it was in some ancient interview.
On the other hand Gers likes to mock about when Eddie robot comes on on stage.

Good point. Are you sure Eddie always came on during the solo when that song was in the setlist? If so, then still I don't remember them standing side by side in 2012 and 2013. I need to look it up to be sure. :)

I was lucky enough to see Maiden in '88 for the 7'th tour of a 7th tour. That was my first maiden concert ever in New Orleans. The setlist was epic, with prisoner, still life, infinite dreams, die with boots on, etc
The second time I ever go to see maiden was in. 2012 in Houston for the Maiden England tour. I thought the setlist was epic and was ecstatic that I got to hear phantom live, and I was skeptical at first but ATSS worked spectacular live.
Don't get me wrong, the 1988 show is emblazoned in my brain forever. The set list as WELL as the stage was phenomenal.
I personally feel that Maiden still put on a killer show. Would I like to see infinite dreams, still life , and killers added? You bet! But I also would like to see them spend a couple of dollars more on the stage and bring back a faithfull recreation of that wonderful stage they toured with in. 88! It was beautiful to look at, and really enhanced the experience and immersed the concert goer even more into their live experience.
Their current "cookie cutter stage with sheets" are cool for the workers to tear down ant the end of the set, but I felt kind of cheated out of the magic that Maiden potentially has to bring like they have before. In Houston , they didn't even have the Prophet prop with the torches .. It was just another airbrushed backdrop. I was actually waiting for a 12 inch Stonehenge figure to lower onto the stage Spinal Tap Style.
Don't get me wrong, I love Maiden to death and I loved seeing them live in theaisem England tour, but I just feel that us diehards and newer fans deserve to be blown away by the only band I know that can still do it! :)
