Been working through the Maiden songs recently trying to rank them. As it stands, there are 11 songs that I've given a 10 to.

From the top:

I was trying to show some restraint. To me, 10/10 is a flawless song. Outside of this list there are a lot of very high 9s, but for whatever reasons I just couldn't justify rounding them up to a 10.

You're not wrong, even the high nines I said about I'd class as flawless, but like I said for whatever reason I just couldn't justify giving them a ten. Sort of made the other tens less special, y'know?

To me, it's kind of the other way around. I tried one time to limit my 10s (I've given 56 songs a 10 score), but I simply couldn't justify lowering any of them down to a 9. For example, if I limited my 10s to 30 songs, "Hallowed" wouldn't get a 10, and that just doesn't feel right because it is a perfect song. There just happen to he 34 others I like more than it.
 
What I’ve started using in my personal ratings are 11s and 12s. 11/10 are reserved for those songs that are just that extra bit special. There are only two of those in Maiden’s discography: “Como Estais Amigos” and “Rime of the Ancient Mariner”.

12/10 is reserved for only one song, and that’s “Empire of the Clouds”, the greatest song of all time.

I'll be honest, I'm pretty liberal with 10/10's. The song might not be perfect in terms of sole existence, but maybe it's place on the album holds enough weight to justify the rating. Maybe the energy of the original recording and the power of its live performances add some extra that justifies that 10/10.

I try to be very sparce with my 10s and only give them to the top of the top tracks. Tracks like Powerslave and Seventh Son are damn fantastic but the 10s are for flawless tracks ;)
