Come on, though.  Liam Neeson as Honest Abe?  Can you think of anyone better?

Henry Fonda. He did it and I thought he was quite convincing.

(wiki):
Henry Fonda originally didn't want the part, stating that he didn't feel right playing such a great man, but changed his mind when he was asked to see what he would look like in makeup and liked the results so much that he said once in an interview that it was like if he had portrayed Christ on film.

Well, he said that it felt like portraying Christ, so if he still feels that way.... ;)

edit:
Liam Neeson played Oskar Schindler (a German, and quite a hero) and that went well. A very fine actor, I am very curious about the result!

O yes indeed! I also liked him in Kingdom of Heaven, but that wasn't a famous person. But I guess he never disappointed me in any role.

I'm not questioning his acting, which is almost always superb. But there's a big difference between Lincoln and Schindler.

I'm not German, so I can't answer with certainty, but I think the answer is "no" to all of these...
Is Schindler such a hero that most Germans consider him the embodiment of a great German (more than most other Germans embody German-ness)?
Is Schindler's face on German money? Was he the first German to ever get his face put on money, like Lincoln with American money?
Are there giant marble monuments to Schindler's memory in Berlin?
Is Schindler's birthday celebrated as a national holiday?

The issue isn't who was "better", Lincoln or Schindler ... the issue is the value placed on Lincoln in American culture.

So my point is: Neeson will likely do a superb job as Lincoln, but something about it just seems deeply wrong to me.

I agree with the differences between those two historical figures. But how American does the actor have to be? He ought to have an American passport, that's it?

Lincoln was from English descent (maybe he didn't have an American identity card either?). ;)

I agree, Lincoln is the embodiment of an American to many people.  Perhaps that is why it is important to have a great actor in the role, instead of a possible flop of an up-and-comer.

What are you talking about, I drink Keith's, and that's always green this time of year.  We conquered it good and honest!

It's regional, really, so I couldn't tell you.  It can be found near the eastern boarder apparently.  Just come up this summer.

Oh, I plan to LC. I think that this weekend I will check the local import beer warehouse for some as well though.

It is supposed to be 70ish F here today!!  (21c)  Finally!  I have all my windows open and some tunes going... and my youngest on the couch watching a movie cause she has Strep Throat AGAIN!! (2nd time in 3 mos )

It's Tuesday!  That's like my weekend.  I work Monday, and Wed - Sat.  So I'm off Sunday and Tuesday.

I would love to hang around the house, drinking green beer today!!!  (or red beer)  However, i have 'lunch duty' at the kids school at noon, then hafta have the oldest daughter to 'talent class' at 5.... kids!!  they are great, but can get in the way of excess drinking!!!
