I haven't read the Hitchhiker's Guide but I have a feeling you may be right. I think the Belgariad maybe a little over their heads as well though.

OK, dude, you have to read Hitchhiker's!!!  Don't read the last part, Mostly Harmless.  But read the rest!!  I think you'll laugh-- he is kinda hard to follow if you aren't paying attention, but is great fun!

You may be right about the Belgariad as well.... especially for the 9 year old--tho I may give it a try, a chapter a night.

I've been meaning to read it but I've got so many series going, it's pathetic. Some of them have recently wrapped up though.

Ever read the Honor Harrington series?  David Weber wrights a lot of good military sci-fi (which I enjoy).

Never even heard of it, I'll check it out though. Is the series wrapped up and if not, how many installments so far? Does the author take forever between books?

David Weber is a pretty fast writer.  There is (I have heard) one book left in the series-- tho the series was wrapped up well enough for me at the end of the last one.  There are probably close to a dozen books in this series (starts with On Basilisk Station)-- call it a star version of France vs England.

There is the Sten series (Cole & Bunch, authors)-- that is a 8 book series and is finished (another military sci-fi).  I could go on and on... I love to read.

Yeah, same here. I just finished up the Sword of Truth series and picked up Duma Key by Stephen King for something to read at the moment. That one is going pretty slow.

You're crazy. Mostly Harmless is a brilliant book. It's weaker than the first three, but there's lots of hilarious stuff in it.

Ah, Terry Goodkind?  I'll have to check it out.  Every one goes on and on about Robert Jordan (RIP), but I've never tried his stuff.  If you like a little fantasy, try something by Mickey Zucher Reichert-- there is a series (4 books if I remember correctly) that deal with a vietnam soldier that gets pulled into a Norse mythology reality as an elf.

Are we speaking about the same book?  Hitchhiker's, Resturant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Unverse and Everything, and So Long and Thanks For All the Fish are all good... that last one, Mostly Harmless really drove me crazy-- I'll declare it was a shitty way to end a series, and could be left at So Long.

Yes, Terry Goodkind. Phenominal series, you must read it now. I was reading Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series but stopped at like book 10 I think; I could not take the drawn out period between books and he became way to descriptive about non-essential stuff around that time. I will have to go through and re-read the whole thing, I know he passed but I think finished up the series before his death. I know the first 7 were good from that series.

George R. R. Martin is good too (A Song of Ice and Fire series), come to think of it, that's stalled too, I need to check on that.....

I'll look into that, Martin's series.  I have the first book in Jordan's, but just haven't opened it yet.

Another good 'sword and sorcery' series is the Tiger and Del series by Jennifer Roberson.

Hey, ever try the Gaurdians of the Flame series?  About the kids that are playing a role playing game and get sucked into the fantasy universe that they were playing the game in?  Was great for the first half dozen books.

I just checked an update on that series (Martin's), the 5th book is still not out and it's been....shit.... like 3 1/2 years since the last one. He's definitely becoming Jordanesque.

Ug, that is a drag.  I remember waiting something like 9 years for Aprin's last Myth-inc book... and it wasn't worth the wait.

Weis and Hickman's "The Death Gate Cycle" I also enjoyed very much.

7 novels:
Dragon Wing
Elven Star
Fire Sea
Serpent Mage
The Hand of Chaos
Into the Labyrinth
The Seventh Gate

I've heard of, but haven't read. I'll give it a shot.

I think we've discussed this, but anyone a Moorcock fan?

I might be the only fantasy lover who can't stand Weis and Hickman.

Well, I heard there's quite some difference between the cycle I just named and the rest.
I can tell you I only know this one and I haven't read any of their other works (apart or together).

It might be true.  All their Dragonlance stuff is garbage.  Come to think of it, I can't stand *any* D&D-related novels.
