I love their powers of regeneration in the case of lost limbs.

Technically, starfish are not fish because they are invertebrates whereas fish are vertebrates. Therefore, starfish should be referred to as seastars.

Actually, my biology professor could probably lecture on and on about seastars...their anatomy, their behaviors, interesting details...and then he would probably go on a tangent about the various organ systems and how other species have developed different ways of dealing with nitrogenous waste (for example) as compared to the seastar...
 
Doesn't sound like a bad discussion. What is your opinion on transplanting seastar DNA into human embryos to try and achieve the power of limb regeneration in "super-humans"?

I hadn't heard about this...I'm not for it simply because there are other problems we humans have that we should tackle before looking at limb regeneration (e.g. cancer).
 
My pleasure, you'd be surprised how difficult it is to find a decent picture of a seastar.

Natalie, I am totally against this concept as well. Gene manipulation of any kind bothers me. I know that in the future the potential for medical advancements could be huge in this field but I really think there are some things we humans should not be messing with.
 
I agree, I believe in that saying: Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
So, unfortunately I must soon leave, but I have exciting news. If we continue posting at this rate (that is, 1000 per month) then we will achieve our goal of 100,000 replies in 8 years :).

Yes, I am a Marine but contrary to popular belief, we do more than just killing. I am, for instance, a computer network administrator, so when things are quiet and working as they should on the job, I have adequate time to post. Luckily, the network is in pretty decent shape.

and yes Wasted, in or around the Pentagon it is!
