Cool!  I just saw a thread on Yuri, i'm heading to check it out.
I haven't seen anything posted about the pirate deal on this board, so I didn't know if it was only new news to me because an American was involved or what... does anyone know much about this whole piracy thing going on?  Is it something that has been going on a long time and the US media mostly ignores?  Or have I just missed all the info?

Yeah, I didn't post anything; I've been following the pirate situation for some time now.  Damn pirates, and I'm glad the US got a crew...but that makes them #3 - Germans got one in January and the Frogs got one earlier this week.

Ah, I'll have to look into that... I read today that the pirates 'vowed revenge'.  Which I think is a stupid thing for them to do.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Yeah!  That's right!  Pirate speedboat vs. USS Dwight D. Eisenhower!
Wow, what a guess.  It turns out the Ike *is* currently forward deployed in the area off Somalia.

That is a great guess!!!

it would be funny.... i think that if they (the pirates) wanted to start a pissing match, a quick coalition would wipe them out pretty quickly.

Well, NATO has like 30 ships in the area now.  So, I think it is a matter of time - I also think that we need more ships in the area, to increase the likelyhood we catch the bastards.  Make sure all our ships have combat forces on them: SAS, SEALs, US Marines, JTF-2, Royal Marines, etc, and start dropping a few chalks on ships when the bastards show up.

I'm a '+1' for that!

It is time to end that mess.

Did I hear correctly, that it was SEALs that rescued the prisoner?

OK, i know it is a bad deal, but that is so cool that they could do that.
Now I have some clarification:  I didn't know that they had some other prisoners (around 230!) and they are threatening to kill them if anyone else tries anything.

Of course they are.

Before NATO showed up, they didn't have the slightest interest in harming their captives.  Now, they do, because they are being actively hunted.  Which means it's time for a surgical strike - call in the SAS, the SEALs, JTF, you know...the elite units.

Well, preferably, get the prisoners.  I wouldn't worry about taking all the kids out.  Problem is most of the hostages are from non-NATO countries like the Philippines and China, so it might be tough to convince the NATO chiefs to agree to a joint strike.  And this isn't one of those things the US should act alone on.  It's going to take all our special ops to cover it.

Ah, so countries that don't have the power or the voice to do much about it.  Well, I do hope that the US and a coalition get together.  You are right, the US shouldn't do it alone.

It's more that what we need to be aware of is the fact that NATO is *the* military power in the world right now.  Excepting the US invasion of Iraq, most of the recent major military actions have been NATO enterprises - Afghanistan, Serbia 1998, Gulf War.  China can't project might like NATO can.

In all fairness, none of us have REALLY seen China project any of it's real might...

We don't know a thing about what they can and can't project, and honestly; I don't wanna know...  :S

After Pearl Harbor, it took only months for the US to produce what was then state of the art war ships.

If China wants sea-power, they can get it just as quickly...

The main reason why China isn't doing anything is because it has nothing to gain...

In fact, China could gain from European and American shipping companies getting hijacked...

The difference is the USA had an established shipping industry; China does not.  Most of their container vessels are built in the USA, Canada, or Europe - or even Japan.  And the USA had a huge, huge economy in WW2, plus the plans were written (USS Essex was on the slips when Pearl Harbor happened).

China has established a a sizable shipping industry in later years, producing everything from shipping vessels to modules intended for oil platforms.

The tension between china and Taiwan has increased Chinas naval activities, but it's of a passive aggressive nature (naval "exercises", patrols, etc.), so we don't hear that much about it.

But thinking that the Chinese DON'T have naval-plans ready at hand, and, in all likelihood, ready-to-go modules of missile launchers, S2A/S2S artillery, radar, etc. intended for naval ships,
would be a great underestimation of their capabilities and resources...

The lack of activity isn't a sign of inability...

Right, you're right, but I am not talking about ability; I'm talking about capacity.  The Chinese navy is not a strong surface flotilla when compared to the USN or Royal Navy; or even the combined arms of NATO.  They cannot project power because they lack that which is required to project power: aircraft carriers.  The United States Navy is able to project power because of the 11 carriers they currently have in service.
