Any interesting concerts in Budapest or is this just a regular holiday/business trip?

I wish .. I am going to a conference and worked in an extra day to see the city (been there twice before ... but still a few things I have missed that I want to see) ... I had hoped I would get insanely lucky and Maiden would be there .. but no go.

I took a look at some concert sites and did not see anyone I am interested in.

Nice! Enjoy the accent! Will you be catching any other Maiden shows while you're here or it is just the one show as part of a holiday/vacation?

Just that one ... my wife and I planned on going to Europe for a vacation this summer and I wanted to work it around a Maiden show. She kinda likes them and is cool going to a show and ends up enjoying it, but a multi-show trip would be pushing it. Plus I assume they will be in the US with this tour next year and like the TBOS tour, I hope to catch 3 shows.

Date-wise, place-wise, and plane ticket cost-wise, the Newcastle show worked out best. We are going to fly to Edinburgh (via London), rent a car and spend some time in Scotland, then drive down to Newcastle, spend 2 days there, then fly back home from Newcastle (via London) .

Looking forward to it except for driving with everything backwards :) Beyond close to 10 times changing planes at Heathrow, this will be our/my first trip to the UK.

Edinburgh might be getting pretty busy at the end of July as the Fringe Festival starts a few days after you'll be there. You should miss the worst of it but you definitely won't be the only Americans in Edinburgh!

You'll also get to enjoy the pleasures of roundabouts in the UK - something which I didn't see any of during my two weeks in the US at the end of last year.

We actually have some roundabouts near us and I have driven through plenty in Europe. We are still finalizing plans, but I think we are going to spend a few days in Edinburgh, then a few days somewhere along the coast in a smaller town (open to suggestions if you have any). Break up the trip part city, part rural, part Maiden :)

I'm not too familiar with the coastline between Edinburgh and Newcastle - only travelled along the coastline in a coach or train. It looks nice when the sun is out though! However I would suggest looking into Berwick-Upon-Tweed which has a lot of history due to having changed hands between Scotland and England several times back in the day. There's also Bamburgh which has an old castle (definitely not something you have in the US!) that features in Bernard Cornwell's Saxon novels. These have also been adapted into a TV series called The Last Kingdom and the author claims to be a descendant of the former inhabitants of the castle. @Brigantium may know that part of the world a lot better but it's on the wrong side of Newcastle from her.

Thanks ... we will look into it. I think we are looking for a location that is somewhat peaceful (at least not a city), near the water, but have at least enough stuff close to go out for dinner/things to see .. and maybe something that just looks "Scottish/English/British" coastal town.

Berwick-Upon-Tweed is one place we have been looking at. Will look into Bamburgh as well, though on the map it looks easy to get from one to the other. That might fit the bill .. appreciate it.

There's also Hadrian's Wall! The ruins stretch inland from Newcastle in dribs and drabs. I think Hexham and surroundings are a good place to see it.

Sweet ... that sounds good too .. would love to see that. When I get back from Budapest, we are going to start booking places to stay. The only place I know for sure is we are staying at a Hampton Inn for 2 nights in Newcastle (had points ... so it is free) .. beyond that, we are looking at Airbnb type places.

And just south of Newcastle there's Durham which I've never been to but it looks spectacular from the train. Was some of Harry Potter filmed there?

You could also visit Janick's regular haunts in Middlesbrough such as the discount store.

Part of Harry Potter was filmed at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland. Durham cathedral cloisters isn't used as much.
