Mercury was the one who suggested Queen use synthesizers in the 80s. Anyone who knows how music is actually produced wouldn't say such a thing anyway.

The internet trend of using Freddie Mercury as a spokesman for the eternal "new music sucks" movement is hilarious. He was quick to jump on new tech and trends in the 80s and probably would still be taking current influences today.

The "new music sucks" and "technology is killing music" movements are hypocritical and nonsensical in their very essence, not a surprise that they're dragging Mercury into it.

Amplification was "new tech" some time ago. And a lot of people had the same reaction to it. "This is soulless and you're killing music".

On the other hand, Mercury's solo career is actually a good example of that, funnily enough. Songs that might have even been good, but made into utter buggerations thanks to the disgusting 80's "cutting edge" production. I mean, is there anyone who actually enjoys Living on My Own or Love Kills?

EDIT: I know there are people who do. What I meant was - is there anyone here?

QFX - Freedom

A true classic and I have to admit that I still play it from time to time.
RE them tapes, naw, these tunes were strictly for dance floor enjoyment. Though I do recall that DJ Tizers first tape was much sought after

You can definitely use technology to mask bad songwriting. Freddie Mercury (and Queen in general) was guilty of this in the 80s. There's also plenty of examples of Queen going the opposite direction and cheapening their good songwriting with technology.

Also examples of 70s bands that went into the 80s more gracefully and utilized new tech. Van Halen and Genesis are the first that come to my mind.
