Can anyone answer this please?

Are the songs Monsegur and Paschendale portmanteaus?  I know mont is French for mountain and dale means valley.  But are the words actual portmanteaus?

I don't think names of locations actually qualify as genuine portmanteaus, as the practice is extremely common.

I've just made up a portmanteau to describe Adrian Smith: awesomazing.

considering that mont = mountain and segur = security, we can actually say that,
yes, Montségur in ancient French was a portemanteau !!

I just hope I understood right the meaning of portemanteau in English

No.5 you crack me up!  Portmanteau is a French word by origin.  :)

But thanks to you and SMX, I received the answer I needed.  You will soon find out why.  Check the best of/worst of forum.  ;)

This is starting to sound like a make your own adventure book. "after going to the best of/worst forum, you can either A) go back to the madness forum, B) General discussion forum or C) die a little inside.... "

OK, let me clarify what I meant then. Many location names are indeed portmanteaus. However, that practice - in that context - is very common. Usually, when people talk about portmanteaus, they omit common instances such as location names.

Wait a second - how often do people actually talk about portmanteaus? I'm a few decades old and this is the first time I've ever seen any discussion about them. Unless you count the Wikipedia article, which I know I've read in the past.

Ah! Maybe that holds the answer. ... ... ... No, it doesn't. But it does lead to this interesting list, which looks to contain a notable portion of bullshit.

Whoa! Is "bullshit" a portmanteau?

OK, sounds good. A decent red does go well with French Bread and extra matured Cheddar. :D

But what is wrong with Bordeaux wines? Is that not where Clarets come from? Clarets do go well with Cheddar. Like Stilton and Port.

nothing wrong, in fact is the typical "answer" to "Cheddar" question ;)
