Interestingly, the Wikipedia article includes this passage:

"Block letters may also be used as a synonym of block capitals, which means writing in all capital letters or in large and small capital letters, imitating the style of typeset capital letters. This is not a necessary implication, however: in at least one court case involving patents, trademarks and registration of designs, the term "block letters" was found to include both upper and lower case.[1]"
Ah, that explains! (I read this after I made my previous post). Thank you!

Yip, block lettering (sorry I mentioned it) does not mean block capitals (large or small); it simply means non-joined-up (non-cursive), in this case, handwriting. I've actually been writing in block letters for years in work, simply because it makes it easier in documents for people to clearly read what has been written, where names & detail are of paramount importance. My handwriting is awful & difficult to read; but even if it was good, people simply can't read handwriting anymore. Better to be clear & understood. If I was just writing a postcard or a note to my partner, those letters (or at least most of them; I'm a combo guy...) would be joined up. Unless I was using my typewriter.

Anyway, time to hit a few second hand bookshops...
