Travis The Dragon

AFTERGLOW!!!
Would you like the song lengths to be similar to their last 3 albums where at least 3 of the songs are over 8 minutes in length or would you like it to be more like their 80's stuff where 1 song is longer and the rest are shorter? Since my favorite songs on their albums are always the longer, more epic ones, I would like them to continue to have at least 3 longer songs. How about you?

I want great songs, maybe some great unexpected moves in the songwriting, but as for the length, I don't give a toss about it.

I added an option for that. :) That's sweet this forum let's you edit your poll.

Most of my favourite songs are longer too but that's mainly because 4 minutes of awesome can't be as good as 10 minutes of awesome.

Take Rainmaker and Dance of Death. Paschendale is my favourite of the album followed by those 2. I rate the 3:48mins of Rainmaker as highly as the 8:36 of DoD but Dance of Death is my second favourite off of the album because it lasts longer.

Then again my favourite album is SSoaSS which contains 4 songs shorter than 5 minutes (about standard for Maiden) so I'm with Jeffmetal. Quality, everytime.

Short songs are usually catchy and fast (which is good), but they also tend to follow the verse-chorus structure (which is boring). The long songs are more atmospheric, with build-ups and breakdowns; much more like an experience or a journey. Alas, many long songs on the three last albums have been extremely predictable and repetitive as well. I guess I agree with Forostar: fresh and unexpected songwriting.

So nr 3 it is.

Well Dance of Death has a real storyline to it, so that's why I would put it over Rainmaker, not just the length.

Anyway I said I prefer the '80s style because they really need another hit like NOTB. Also, the song NOTB shows that they can write songs that take you on a journey but aren't ridiculously long. I'm not saying I want a bunch of Wicker Mans or Different Worlds.

"Lenghts don't matter"...that's what she said.
I'm with the new and different...better quality.  However, the long songs are also some of my favorites...plus, it seems, that Maiden does the 'long songs' much better than the rest.

Why do Maiden need a hit like NotB? Their as big now as they've ever been (ish).

The Angel and the Gambler proves that length does not matter, but for me, the awesomeness of the song generally corresponds to the length.  Or, to put it another way, all my absolute favourites are 7+ minutes.  So, since I'm counting on Maiden putting out good songs, I'd rather have them long than short. :)

The average person only knows NOTB. The last few albums have been successful but none of them have really had a "hit".

Why do Maiden need a hit?  They are doing very well financially, they are almost universally recognised in the metal scene, and they sell out shows everywhere.  If they became more mainstream, the hardcore "real" fans would have a harder time getting tickets, your Maiden shirt would become just one in a crowd, etc.  Maiden if anyone deserve success, but I also don't want them becoming mainstream music of the masses.  They're already close to that in some places.  I'd rather have a new Hallowed Be Thy Name than a new Run to the Hills. :)

I was thinking something more like 2 Minutes; not a huge hit but something to get people to say "wow they still got it!", y'know? Something that will be a setlist staple.

This is an interesting topic here.  I think there will be a radio hit on this album.  I don't really care if there is, but Benjamin breege, all 7+ minutes of it hit the mainstream radiowaves, so I think there will be a bigger hit here.  It has been a while since Maiden cracked the radio here in the states with a mega hit.
Breege was too long for most stations and there dumbed down audiences. Wicker man was a natural radio play, even though it isn't one of my favorites.  I think we will have another NOTB or RTTH type mega song on this disc.  If we do great.  If not, no problem. I have a feeling this album will be more like NOTB and produce a new batch of classics. MAIDEN is bigger and better than ever, this is a great time to be a Maiden fan, enjoy it mates!!!!!!

Can a group like Maiden go mainstream in this day and age?  It seems with the likes of Napster etc. that an idiot on the streets who may hear a new Maiden song on the radio is going to go online and just buy the song....probably never knowing about and of Maiden's past classics let alone the great stuff that doesn't become a single.

Now I saw a version of the Killers t-shirt at wal-mart the other day....maybe if there is a Maiden song on Kidz Bop....they'll be mainstream?  Shit...let's hope not.

No kidding!! I saw the Killers T at Walmart too.  WTF is going on there?  Walmart won't sell a pop CD with the word hell or your Mamma' in the lyrics.  But they will sell a T shirt to the kiddies depicting an undead prowler savagely murdering  an innocent victim with a hatchet?!!  Man times have changed.  This is why I'd rather keep Maiden off the radio.  We don't need Justin Beiber fans walking around sporting Maiden gear!!  The countdown is dwindling!!!!!!!!  hahahahaha!!!!

Maybe we just have a fundamental difference in our point of view, but I still want to pursue this because it's interesting.  So bear with me, I might come off as a bit obnoxious or something but my intention is not to be offensive.

Why should people need to say "wow they still got it"?  Overall, what does it matter what most people think of Maiden?  You like Maiden, I like Maiden, everyone else on this board likes Maiden.  If they make an album that we all like, then what does it matter what other people think?  Like I said, Maiden sell out shows, are financially well off, etc.  They don't really need popularity.  Even if the new album is a total flop commercially, does it ultimately matter if it's still a good album in our opinion?

I might be playing a bit of devil's advocate, but since we seem to have very different points of view I hope you understand; I'm just trying to understand yorus a bit better.

I absolutely see your point too, but I would like another classic album like NOTB mainly because it would just be great to see them really get recognized for the awesome stuff they've been putting out lately, and because there are usually some great deeper tracks on those type of albums too (think Total Eclipse,  To Tame A LAnd, Rime of the A.M.)
