Led Zeppelin set to re-form for O2 gig

The legendary rock band Led Zeppelin are planning to play a huge comeback concert at the O2 arena, the concert hall housed in the former Millennium Dome.

According to reports the supergroup, who disbanded 27 years ago, are in talks with the owners of the 20,000 capacity venue to stage a spectacular one off show at the end of the year.

Speculation has been rife that the three surviving band members, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones had been planning to perform their greatest hits at a memorial concert for the late Island Record boss Ahmet Ertegun.

Now it looks like they have chosen the venue.

No official confirmation has been given but sources have confirmed they are in talks with the owners of the venue in Greenwich, south east London.

A source said: "The talks are ongoing but it looks like a definite possibility. Nothing has been finalised but fingers crossed the most anticipated comeback concerts ever could become a reality."

When drummer John Bonham died in 1980, his bandmates declared that Led Zeppelin had died with him.

The trio's only other reunions were a disappointing performance at the 1985 Live Aid concert, with Genesis drummer Phil Collins, and their 1995 induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

The concert is likely to coincide with the release of a greatest hits collection for November. The late John Bonham is expected to be replaced on drums by his son Jason.

The benefit concert is expected to be in memory of Ertegun who first signed them, Ahmet. He died last October after falling at a Rolling Stones concert.

It is believed that fellow rock legends Cream are also reforming to play a concert for Ertegun.

Despite the strong speculation which was sparked by adverts appearing in a national newspaper, promoters warned fans not to buy tickets yet as nothing was confirmed.

Premier Entertainments company are offering hotel and ticket packages for £269 and insisted the official announcement was about to be made.

Neither the venue or the agents for the band were prepared to comment.

Led Zep's albums have continued to be huge sellers since the 1970s and Stairway to Heaven remains hugely popular on the radio and on karaokes.

The band, whose excesses were formidable, were the fathers of "hard rock" and were responsible for hundreds of long haired, spandex trousered imitators.

I've held a grudge against anyone I've met who saw Zeppelin in concert, and I hope if this is announced then I have enough money to get the ticket. ;)

And the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert in the mid-late 80s - I think it was 1987. Jason Bonham played drums, and I clearly remember that they played "Whole Lotta Love" at least.

Re: Led Zeppelin

Indeed:

....In 1988, I went to New York City to attend the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert at Madison Square Garden. The concert was a 13 hour marathon, showcasing new talents Debbie Gibson and Nu Shooz — both denizens of the 'where are they now' file — perennial favorites Phil Collins and Crosby, Stills & Nash, and several of Atlantic's early R&B artists like LaVerne Baker, Ruth Brown and Ben E. King.

The most anticipated acts were, however, a handful of special groups reuniting for the event. This included Vanilla Fudge, Average White Band and The Rascals, to name a few. But it was the closing act of the evening, the coup de grace of the entire day, the 20-year old proverbial drawing card and cash cow for Atlantic Records that seemed to have the Garden buzzing. I can still remember the excitement as Ahmet Ertegan, the Chairman of The Board for Atlantic Records, stepped up to the podium on the side of the stage and uttered those two highly anticipated words: "Led Zeppelin."

At the time, I thought this was about as close as it was going to get to the real thing. All the important elements were there: Page, Plant, Jones and...Bonham? Well, actually, it was Jason Bonham who sat in for his deceased father. And it was quite evident that young Jason was the only one who bothered to rehearse for the show. Needless to say, the band's ponderous one-two punch of old was conspicuously absent. And any ideas for future reunions were firmly put to rest.....

In case anyone cares...

LONDON (Reuters) - Rock legends Led Zeppelin were set to announce a one-off comeback concert on Wednesday nearly three decades after disbanding.

The group split in 1980 after the death of drummer John Bonham and have performed only a handful of reunion gigs, last taking the stage 12 years ago at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Music Web site NME.com reported the show will be held in November in London.

Bonham's son Jason is expected to wield the drum sticks.

Rounding out Led Zeppelin, rated the best ever hard-rock band by U.S. channel VH1, would be its classic founding trio of singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones.

NME.com said it would be a one-off show, not a full-fledged reunion tour.

Plant and Page have joined forces over the years, notably on an album in 1994, but Jones has been more distant. When Bonham passed away after a long battle with alcoholism, his bandmates said Led Zeppelin, formed in 1968, had died with him.

November is the scheduled release month for a greatest hits collection from the band.

The reunion gig is slated for London's 02 Arena, which has a capacity of 20,000.

VH1 is not an authority on hard rock or metal. Most of their lists about metal have been displays of ignorance at best.

It is fair to argue that Zep is the greatest hard rock band ever. That claim could be contested, but Zep would certainly be a reasonable candidate for the title.

So I'm not complaining about the "best ever" description, just the source.

Not entirely his own fault. When Page and Plant toured together in 1994, they purposely did not invite Jones, who was in turn upset at not being invited.

Zep released very few singles. "Whole Lotta Love", "Immigrant Song" and "Fool In The Rain" were singles - there may have been a few more I don't remember, but certainly not enough to fill a CD.

So any such collection must come down to someone's opinion of the best Zep songs. If that choice is made by Page/Plant/Jones, fair enough. If it's made by anyone else ... opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

Led Zep released even fewer singles in the UK - none, to be precise. Which leads me to suggest that Stairway to Heaven is the type of track that would lead the way (which just so happens to be their most overly played and overrated track).

Led Zeppelin Reunion - Full Details Revealed

NME.com reports:

"Led Zeppelin will reform for a one-off show at the O2 arena in London it was confirmed today (September 12th).

The show is being held to raise money for the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund, which pays for university scholarships in the UK, US and Turkey. The fund was created in honour of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun who died last year. He worked helped further the career of a host of acts including Led Zeppelin.

"During the Zeppelin years, Ahmet Ertegun was a major foundation of solidarity and accord. For us he was Atlantic Records and remained a close friend and conspirator," explained Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant of the band's decision to reform. "£his performance stands alone as our tribute to the work and the life of our long standing friend."

LED ZEPPELIN's 'Return Flight Interview' Posted Online - Nov. 3, 2007

In LED ZEPPELIN's "Return Flight Interview", the bandmembers talk about mending fences, what they've been doing over the years during the split, how there was something missing when Robert Plant was doing solo work, how punk has gone mainstream, and more.

The heavily anticipated reunion of the surviving members of LED ZEPPELIN, scheduled for November 26 at the O2 Arena in London, has been postponed until December 10. According to a press statement, the concert, a tribute to late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, has been pushed back because ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page fractured a finger. The injury, which Page sustained this past weekend, will keep him from picking up a guitar for three weeks, after which a specialist said that Page will be able to resume rehearsals for the rescheduled show.

Page said in the statement, "I am disappointed that we are forced to postpone the concert by two weeks. However, LED ZEPPELIN have always set very high standards for ourselves, and we feel that this postponement will enable my injury to properly heal, and permit us to perform at the level that both the band and our fans have always been accustomed to."

All tickets for the show, which were sold through a worldwide lottery, will be valid for the rescheduled date.

Anyone unable to attend the show on December 10 will be able to receive a full refund until noon U.K. time on November 14. Tickets available as a result of refunds will be offered to random ballot winners drawn from the original lottery. Information on obtaining a refund can be found at AhmetTribute.com.

The show will feature Page, singer Robert Plant and bassist John Paul Jones performing together for the first time in 18 years, with Jason Bonham, son of late ZEPPELIN drummer John Bonham, sitting behind the kit. Bill Wyman and the RHYTHM KINGS, Paul Rodgers, Paolo Nutini, and FOREIGNER are also scheduled to appear.

Rumors continue to circulate that a full LED ZEPPELIN tour is in the works for 2008, although the band has remained ambivalent about any future plans.

Comment from someone on Blabbermouth (as national acrobat and SMX have already stated):
First time in 18 years????
The surviving members of Led Zeppelin last played together at the band's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 1995, which was only 12 years ago.

This whole "first time in 18 years thing" may refer to Zeppelin onstage alone. I didn't see their induction into the Hall of Fame, but at those event the stars often either:
1. participate in an all-star jam with many others, or...
2. are backed by Paul Schaffer's band.

So it's possible that Zep didn't perform alone in 1995. They may have been jamming with additional musicians. Anybody know for sure?

I know Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith inducted Led Zeppelin into the Rock Hall of Fame.  I do recall them jamming together on Misty Mountain Hop; I'm not sure if this was from the same night.  I'll check to be sure.

It was Bring It On Home.  The other song must have been a different night.

I thought so too, but at some point, I just gave up. And by that, I mean giving up Blabbermouth completely.

This is quite a bump, but just saw that they announced a theatrical release of this concert on October 17 and CD/DVD/BluRay release in November. I think I'm excited about this. Teaser video here (sounds awesome):

I'm a huge Zep fan (they're in my top 10) but for some reason this doesn't interest me in the slightest.
