Virtual XI

It's not that I don't like Blaze, because after getting into The X Factor I really have respect for the man, and technically the writing and music on VXI is better suited for his voice. But the songs are pretty uninspiring except for The Clansman, imo. They're repetitive, there's no energy in the production, and the lyrics pale in comparison The X Factor.

Even the "bad" albums usually have a few saving graces (NPFTD had the title track, Running Silent Running Deep, Mother Russia, the over-rated but still decent Bring Your Daughter. FOTD had FOTD, Afraid to Shoot Strangers, Childhood's End and Wasting Love), but save for The Clansman, I really can't get into any track on Virtual XI.

OK, I finally voted

I voted for Virtual XI basically because I don't have, and can't find it in record stores, for that reason alone it makes it mostly annoying to me  :P

No Prayer For The Dying.

I find this album poor in production, lacking of good songs and generally dull. (by Maiden's standards that is. Maiden's worst is by far better than most band's better.)

Even though I might sound harsh, this isn't a "bad" album. It's perfectly worthy of listening once in a while, and Tailgunner, Holy Smoke, Mother Russia and (sometimes) Bring your Daughter to the Slaughter are good songs, and even some ofthe good songs are lacking compared to most Maiden songs.

I voted for Somewhere In Time. That was the first Iron Maiden LP that actually repulsed me. Most everything they've done since has been kinda "meh" although the last few albums have been decent.

Killers- it's just plain dull compared to Maiden's other works

On the contrary, I find Killers to be a razor-sharp slab of NWOBHM, freshened up with Martin Birch's production to give an excellent follow-up to the self-titled.  Indeed, the sheer intensity of the songs on Killers (particularly songs like Purgatory, Murders... and the title track) can be seen to have influenced the thrash metal movement in America, as both Metallica's and Slayer's early songs are an almost natural conclusion to what bands like Maiden, Diamond Head, Blitzkrieg et al were releasing in the early 80's (not to forget Venom as another influential BHM band!)

I sympathize with you.  I had to order it on-line through Amazon and it still cost me $22.00, making it the most expensive Iron Maiden CD I bought.

I vote No Prayer cuz Bruce...I think Harris influenced him to go that way...he wanted the band to go back to a "traditional" rock direction or whatever...I don't care for Bruce's singing on that one. i can't believe "Bring Your Daughter..." is Maiden's ONLY #1 song! Shit , if Brighter Than A Thousand Suns would have been played on the radio? I think it would have moved to #1...sorry, I'm ranting here.

Agree on the point about Bring Your Daughter. That this is Maiden's only #1 tells a lot about how valuable this kind of list is  :turd: Actually, I don't like this song at all and it would make it into my top 5 of "Least favourite Maiden song".

Still, No Prayer for the Dying is not my least favourite album, I quite like some of the songs - and more songs than on the successor. See my "General album ratings" post for the reasoning - my vote here goes to Fear Of The Dark.

Alright. After some days of anti-BYDTTS posts, that I've witnessed recently, I'd like to counter-attack these sympathies.

You know what? Most people who don't like BYDTTS haven't witnessed it in concert. They do not know the true power of the track when it comes alive.

In concert, it's a GREAT, I repeat A GREAT moment. What a cool atmosphere, what a crowd-involvement! No one's foot stands still, and everyone's head starts nodding when the band comes on stage with this track. By FAR one of the biggest highlights of the Fear Of The Dark Tour, A Real Live Tour & Give Me Ed... 'Til I'm Dead Tour.

We'll talk again if you ever get the chance to see it (if Maiden will play it).  :innocent:

If Maiden will not play it again, before they call it quits, then why not see "Live at Donington", or play "A Real Live One" to taste a bit of it. Like it or not, let's not disqualify hundreds of thousands (or even millions) of people who do like it, by disqualifying Maiden's no. 1 hit success, and by disregarding the energy that this song creates in a live situation, when a crowd gets enthousiastic. Tastes differ, but facts don't.

Of course it's far more important what you like than what others like, so don't take my comments too seriously. I only like to make clear that the song was not unwelcome when Maiden played it.

And to take offense by the title/lyrics because you might have a daughter (both Baeleron & Maverick have stated this in their commentaries) sounds very strange in my ears. This is music, come on! Didn't we all think that the lawsuits vs heavy metal were rediculous? Now then, let's judge BYDTTS by the same merits.

I'll agree with you Forostar, to a certain degree. I have seen it done live (during the No Prayer tour), but that is not the reason I quite like the track - I just like it, full stop. When I did see it live, however, I felt it wasn't that special - but that's just my opinion. ;)

Alright. Since I've heard so many people say Waldrock '03 was the best gig they ever did, I need to listen to it.

Well, it certainly may be the favourite gig (after 2000) I've witnessed. Waldrock 2003 might also be one of the best sound quality bootlegs around !

When it comes to bootlegs, Waldrock 03 is definitely the best quality one I've heard.  I seem to remember Freaky saying something about it being drawn from the soundboard?

Unfortunately BYDTTS was not played on all dates during the Give Me Ed... 'Til I'm Dead Tour.  I wanted to see it played in Toronto and they did not play it for some reason (or Brave New World for that matter).  :(

If I remember correctly, they were co-headlining with Motorhead and Dio those nights, which meant they had less stage time and had to cut a few songs.

Yes they were co-headlining with those bands.  Maiden stole the show, though Dio was great too.  Motorhead was way too loud to understand.  :D

However, I've noticed that other shows in Europe did not have songs like The Clairvoyant and Heaven Can Wait, while they played these songs in Toronto.

Not really. Heaven Can Wait was played at every European gig and The Clairvoyant was played at almost every European gig (maybe not at 2 or 3 gigs).
