Although it doesn't include anything groundbreaking about Iron Maiden, I liked hearing about his background and his opinions on music, and the scattered bits and pieces about Maiden throughout the interview (mostly at the 11.10 mark). Things that I took away:

He doesn't like mixing the lower frequencies high in the mix.

At first he didn't want to work with Maiden "because they were on a downward trajectory" and he didn't really listen to Maiden. He says now loves them like his brothers.

They had also had conversations with Mike Clink and Richie Zito (hadn't heard of them, I googled them, both produced various bands but closer to Maiden's genre were hair metal bands, Megadeth and Guns 'n' Roses) and Mutt Lange.

Steve wanted him to produce them because he liked how Silverchair's 1995 debut album Frogstomp sounded, Bruce liked Kevin's work with Dream Theater, Adrian liked his work with Aerosmith and Journey.

Everything's fine, thanks for asking! My working hours have been insane for over a decade now. Had forgot how prolific this forum is. I always peaked on the official forum now and again and was let down at how shallow the discussion is over there so didn't feel like contributing. The monthly emails "here's what you missed in the last month" that I was ignoring for ages got my attention now that I'm on summer vacation and here I am!
 
Man, thanks for this! Have to check the entire vid at some point - Beato often makes great interviews, although he's a bit too cozying up to his interview subjects in general, I think, but that's also part of why he gets the guests he does.

With all respect... he didnt want to work with maiden because they were on downward trajectory??? Ive never heard about him before maiden. Not that im an expert of producers but i know the famous
 
Great interview but I do find it a bit strange how Rick tends to change subject/deviate to another band whenever Kevin brings up Maiden. Maybe he just isn't a fan of them

Kevin Shirley was and is a prominent producer. By the time of BNW, he had done records with multiple famous A-level artists.

If I remember correctly, he had already worked with Rush, Aerosmith, and The Black Crowes before he started working with Maiden.

And Dream Theater as well. I thought Falling into Infinity had a pretty dominant drum sound, in much the same way as BNW.

But i mean that kevin wasnt famous producer or yes? I dont think so

Just checked wikipedia aerosmith 1995 and a few big names during 1996 1997

Ok im not an expert in the famous producer apart from martin birch and rick rubin and the one that i dont like at all Charlie Bauerfeind. Apart from the big names i dont know about them
