I have decided that during this month, I'm going to listen to some new music every day. When I say "new" I mean "new to me" - it can actually be old music. I'll post about it here, and I encourage everyone else to do the same. Let's make this a month to expand our horizons.
I'm using Pandora and just typing in one artist name to start. Here's how it has gone so far...
June 1: Dream Theater
I listen to DT all the time, but I kept on rejecting mainstream tunes until Pandora fed me some deeper prog. Lots of Flower Kings, including their legendary song "Stardust We Are", which I had never heard in its entirety before.
June 2: Eric B. & Rakim
A legendary rap duo, and they deserve it. They are to rap what Hendrix is to rock guitar: everyone after them shows their influence. I rejected gangsta rap to get some more old school out of Pandora, and discovered that I like Big Daddy Kane. I still think Run DMC is overrated and usually boring, and I'm disappointed with what I heard from KRS-One. He can be great, but more often falls just short.
June 3: Iron Maiden
This was an experiment about Pandora. I typed in Maiden to see what other groups would come up, and it went in the direction of classic metal: Priest, Dio, Ozzy etc. That was fine, it worked for last night. I'd been hoping for some deeper NWOBHM, so I might seek that later this month.
June 4: Godsmack
A guy at work was raving to me about Disturbed and Godsmack today. This guy is my age and shares most of my taste in music; he said he was himself surprised when he found that he liked those bands too. I've heard a bunch of Disturbed, but not much Godsmack, so that's getting entered into Pandora now. We'll see how it goes...
Your turn. Go. Do it. Find some new music. You know you want to.
