Is there a message?

I've read somewhere on this forum "the main message conveyed by Iron Maiden is freedom of thinking" (not quoting the exact phrase)...
Do you think Maiden lyrics (in general) covey a message, an ethical stance or something similar? If there is such thing it really has a shape that's for me difficult to picture...
Any ideas?

Not really to be honest. This fits more Bad Religion.

They do not want to spread "a" message. There is no general message. Maiden write about things they're interested in, or about their own experiences and emotions.

Never said it was going to be easy :p But here are links to some songs that I personally liked the commentary for:

I know they are from only two albums, but you can see that maiden draws from several sources of inspiration, sometimes with a very cryptic message, no real message, or a very clear one (not necesarily free thought). Also I hope this encourages you to read the rest of the commentary! Very well worth it :)
