Is it sacrilege not to like # of the beast or RTT Hills ?!

I think both of those songs are overplayed yet still incredible.  Of the two, I like Run to the Hills significantly less than Beast.  I do find it somewhat hard to believe a Maiden fan couldn't at least appreciate both tunes regardless of their stature.

The studio version of 'The Number Of The Beast' is second to none. I've never heard a live version of that song which excels that studio work.

I also find NOTB, RTTH, and this entire album overrated. The only standout tracks to me are Children and Hallowed, and I don't even like those two that much. How people can compare this album to gems like Powerslave, Seventh Son, or even SIT is beyond me.

I have never liked NOTB. I think it is quite possibly the most overrated Maiden song out there; the song just doesn't "click" with me. As far as RTTH goes, it's a decent song, but nothing special. I guess I prefer Maiden's more epic, drawn-out stuff of recent years, or classic epics like ROTAM or SSOASS.

Pretty much this.

Maybe because the scream Bruce does in the recorded version is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement?

I absolutely love Number of the Beast, it is and always will be one of my favorite Maiden songs. Run to the Hills, meh. It's pretty middle of the pack if I had to rank my Maiden songs in order. I was glad that they didn't play it on the last tour to be honest, even though I'd never seen them live. It's the kind of song where if my iPod is on shuffle and RTTH comes on, I'll listen to it. But I don't find myself deliberately selecting it very often.

Gangland and Run to the Hills are the 2 weakest off the album for me but they aren't that bad

Damn, I love Gangland... I don't think that makes me less of a fan.  :)

I've come to the conclusion that I only really "like" RTTH for nostalgic purposes (I remember it getting some decent airplay back in the day) and it helped get me on to the Maiden bandwagon back in the 80s.  I guess it served its purpose.  I'm not overly found of it anymore.

I would much rather hear 22AA or the Prisoner take its place in the setlist...

In your case, yes yes it does :P J/K I'm glad I'm not the only one showing Gangland some love. I REALLY like the "jazzy" feel Burr lends to the track and the solo is rather catchy.

As for the original post. I've said it many times. Maiden is definitely more than their hits. Every time they release a "best of" "greatest" or "essential" collection I am always disappointed. It is always far from "best", "greatest" or "essential". Maiden is just one of those bands you have to buy the albums or you REALLY miss out.

I love and admire both songs, even if I rarely listen to them since they've been overplayed in my stereo.
Both are accomplished songs lyrically and musically. They are dense in their construction -especially RTT Hills, which in only 3'50" gives you a drum intro, the best Maiden galloping until then, a catchy chorus, a guitar solo not that bad, a kick ass bass kind of solo /bridge and a yeeeah -oh-oh-oh sing along section not at all repetitive /boring even after 25 years.
For all the above reasons, plus the production I admire Run To The Hills.
The Number Of The Beast, which is similarly dense in its construction, I like it even better, notably for the terrific spoken intro, the excellent Bruce vocals, its more accomplished story line and its better guitar solos.

So to answer to your question: no it's not a sacrilege, how it could be. But it's a kind of weird  :P

That's why I really think they should do a "Songs Never Played on Tour Before" tour.  :)

Whoa. That would rock very, very hard. Of all things Maiden-related I don't see happening, this is perhaps the one I'd like the most.

Regardin NOTB and RTTH; The latter was one of the first Maiden songs I heard, I thought it was cool, I still think so, but it is not really that special compared to many later songs. NOTB, on the other hand, is a song I don't get tired of.

Yep, it could rock:

Invaders
Montségur
The Thin Line Between Love and Hate
Fates Warning
Childhood's End
Judgement of Heaven
Como Estais Amigos
Flash of the Blade
Run Silent Run Deep
The Nomad
Face in the Sand
Mother Russia
---
Deja Vu
Alexander the Great
Only the Good Die Young

Or it could... rock less:
Quest for Fire
Gangland
Fear is the Key
The Age of Innocence
Gates of Tomorrow
2 A.M.
The Apparition
The Unbeliever
---
New Frontier
Chains of Misery

Imagine going to a Maiden show and having no idea of the set list. Then the show starts with "In a time, when dinosaurs walked the earth...".  Though I'd probably be pumped whatever the song was.

:help:

(But I do like the fact that you only could come up with a 10-song set list for the "could rock less" scenario  :D)

After one show, no one would go in the US. A lot of people were bitching here on the last tour because of a lack of classics. Fucking idiots, they didn't realize what they were getting. So with a setlist that 70% of concert going fans in this country wouldn't even recognize, it would be a fiscal diasaster for the band.

Deano, Somewhere Back In Time tour sold 2 million, 461 thousand and 588 tickets. In United States, 313.250 of those.
That means that USA shows had a approx 12.73% sold tickets of overall tour sales. Even if we consider that average USA tour part ticket is more expensive than average tour ticket, i don't believe that USA's fiscal share would be more than 15%.

Count the fact that there would still be a few shows around USA, and the fact is that this hypothetical tour would be far from fiscal disaster.

Holy crap if the set list started off with Quest for Fire and Gangland??  I would be jumping out of my skin!!  I love both of those songs big time!!  Quest for fire is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO underrated on this sight!!  It rocks.  And Gangland, one of my favorites of #OTB.
