PENO
Fates Warning
BYD

I actually really like this album, and voting Fates is really difficult. :/

Bring the assassin to the slaughter, and hang him on the hooks in the ceiling.

Indeed.

Sure, PENO, Fates Warning and Running Silent, Running Deep are hardly classics but they're damn good.

Indeed. Same goes for Mother Russia, which is a majestic epic.

Well, I really like those mentioned tracks (PENO, FW, RSRD and MR) as well as the title track. Their problem in the Survivor type of game is that when we have picked 10 songs from the first 7 albums, we already have 10 classics (even after some have been put aside until later). I cannot make myself vote out for example Where Eagles Dare for any of the mentioned NPFTD songs. NPFTD has a couple of crappy songs (The Assassin being a clear #1), but is generally decent. Still, it is the first Maiden album which does not contain a single song I would label "classic".

Re: Iron Maiden Survivor 2010: No Prayer For The Dying round 1 (Sep 15-16)

That has also to do with the fact that Maiden haven't played these songs that often (or at all). Only Tailgunner and Daughter "survived" (ha!) after the No Prayer-tour. Take Only The Good Die, a fantastic track, but I couldn't call it a classic, because it never got any attention on stage (or anywhere else).

I don't define "classic" according to consensus. That definition would obviously have to include whether the band had played it frequently live or not. I share your love for Only The Good Die Young - and thus I label it "classic" in its own right. The band obviously don't agree with me, though  :( It would make a great last song in an encore. Imagine an encore containing two live classics (2MtoM and Hallowed, for example) and then Only The Good Die Young? I would probably not believe my own ears.

Re: Iron Maiden Survivor 2010: No Prayer For The Dying round 1 (Sep 15-16)

IMHO it has two top notch songs : title track, public enema...and three that are crappy (the three we both voted for).
Other songs are good.

Well I wouldn't label a song which doesn't get any attention on any concert, live -, best of -, or compilation album as classic, even if I'd love it very much. Because then "my love for" = "classic".
Ah never mind, this is getting too academic.  ;)

Re: Iron Maiden Survivor 2010: No Prayer For The Dying round 1 (Sep 15-16)

The Assassin, Hooks In You, Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter.

There's only 1 song I'd even consider in the next 2 albums, so things are alot easier than the past 3 albums.

Too academic? Does not make sense to me (but then I'm a PhD student ... :innocent:)

Well, I would separate between songs that I personally love (but that are very different from the "classics") and songs that are actually quite similar to the classics. For example, Still Life is not a "classic" in the same way as OTGDY. The latter has many of the ingredients that are well-known vintage Maiden stuff - galloping bass and guitar, and a great chorus that people can sing along with. I just can't understand that it was never played live. It would have made an awesome live track.

I think that most of Maiden's material would make awesome live tracks. Too bad we will never get to see some of them :(

@EW: I call that vintage, or trademark, or signature Maiden.

RTTH, NOTB, Hallowed, Phantom, IM and Trooper are for me classics. :)

Well, that seems to be a more common way of defining those terms. I will try to adjust my language a little, no use for me to define everything in my own way. Except in the upcoming PhD thesis, of course  :D Due in 11 months  :help:

Re: Iron Maiden Survivor 2010: No Prayer For The Dying round 1 (Sep 15-16)

The Assassin
Hooks in You
...Daughter...Slaughter

Re: Iron Maiden Survivor 2010: No Prayer For The Dying round 1 (Sep 15-16)

This is tough, so many Prayer songs to eliminate...
Hooks, Enema, Assassin

And before I get accused of bashing NPFTD, that sums up my feelings exactly
