Iron Maiden "S&M" Setlist

Siddharth

Long Distance Trooper
If Maiden ever decided to make an album full of classics with an entire orchestral ensemble, similar to how Metallica did on their S&M album, a setlist by me would be like this:

1. Aces High
2. Dance Of Death
3. Phantom Of The Opera
4. The Trooper
5. No More Lies
6. Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
7. Paschendale
8. Infinite Dreams
9. Powerslave
10. Wasting Love
11. Don't Look To The Eyes Of A Stranger
12. The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg
------------------ENCORE-------------------
13. Hallowed Be Thy Name
14. The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner
15. Hell On Earth

I have added songs which would actually sound great in a symphonic setup. You can make your own setlist. It can be either live or a studio recording. Mine is Live!

I’m pretty sure we’d get something more like this—Steve, out of the blue, wanting once again to prove something and resurrect those hidden gems:

1. The Angel and the Gambler (extended version—not just the album version, but extended beyond that)
2. Lightning Strikes Twice
3. Fear Is the Key
4. Wasting Love
5. Chains of Misery
6. The Apparition
7. When Two Worlds Collide
8. The Educated Fool
9. Don’t Look to the Eyes of a Stranger (extended version…)
10. 2 A.M.
11. The Unbeliever
12. Age of Innocence
13. Iron Maiden

14. Mother of Mercy
15. Face in the Sand
16. Virus

It would be a nice project.
Something like
1. Caught Somewhere in Time
2. Ghost of the Navigator
3. Phantom of the Opera
4. The Trooper
5. Powerslave
6. Revelations
7. For the Greater Good of God
8. Infinite Dreams
9. Dance of Death
10. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
11. The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg
12. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
13. Aces High
Encore
14. Hell on Earth
15. Hallowed be thy Name
16. Wasted Years

probably the order would be different and maybe they'd include a Blaze era song or FOTD too

I've written before about this topic, but I genuinely think that the majority of their catalogue, especially the 80s stuff, is not suited at all to an orchestra.

It's a pet peeve of mine when metal bands put an orchestra on top that just mimics the riffs or has the violins shadow the lead guitar or vocals. It's just soooo boring and doesn't use any of the strengths of an orchestra.

So, with that out of the way I think the only songs that would translate well would be ones with enough room for experimentation. Stuff like Fear Of The Dark, Wasting Love, Coming Home, Blood Brothers, Dance Of Death, The Thin Line Between Love And Hate, The Legacy, Empire Of The Clouds. Maaaybe Powerslave, SSOASS, Childhood's End, NPFTD?

Here's a thread where a cover band had an orchestra play with them. Listen to stuff like RTTH, it doesn't work at all in my opinion. I gave a thorough review in that thread and the video is well worth watching to see how such an event could sound like.

Metallica's S&M sounds predominantly like this: they play like usual, and the orchestra is just added on top, which sometimes works, sometimes not, and sometimes it's a bit too busy. If the band worked more with the composer/arranger/whoever to make arrangements that are truly different, it would sound much better. Ditto for Maiden, they surely have many interesting songs which they could arrange, albeit not necessarily greatest hits
