hey evryone

did any one buy the hammer special eddition of iron maiden?
its got every thing you could want to know aobut them. its got all the albums reviewd, there insprrations and who they have inspried e.g trivium and sum 41

I have no knowledge of how things are on the official Maiden boards. I felt comfortable here from the very beginning for the following reasons: small community, a lot of intelligent members and material to read, and moderation. One that accepts mistakes, but is strict with plain and recurrent stupidity.

There have been some words over at PH's newbie thread about taking the law in someone's own hands, and new members versus the old. Well I don't care about who's old and who's new (who are we anyway, to sort people like this?). All I care is if people make me want to read their posts and think, or discuss, or laugh. To me, there are only two kinds of law in a forum - the laws of the given language, and the law of common sense. That includes humour, too - we should not only take stupidity seriously, but also laugh at it, as well as ourselves. Let me live up to this postulate, will you?

(And yes, I am passionate about languages, English being just one of them [!--emo&:)--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/smile.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'smile.gif\' /][!--endemo--] )

This CRAPPY written post here makes this look like the official BB, not the intelligent - and well-written - posts that we all like to read.
People who are not native English speakers are obsessed by the grammar and structure of the language because else they can't f'kin understand it!

I like this board because the users do care for what they write and HOW they do it.

I don't wanna read "Irno Midane fookin RoXxOrZ!" posted a million times a day. And THAT's what the official board looks like.

Look I appreciate that the first post in this thread was badly written and I'm fine for this being pointed out but the topic had turned into a near flame war about spelling and grammer. Mav's first reply was fine and made the point however following replys from various members of this forum were not really necessary. Posts such as

Moderation is pretty good here but this topic hadnt been moderated, it was used as a verbal smackdown against someone who's English is clearly not as good as ours

The point is that in the future, be polite when correcting people. We don't want to turn this into a flame forum, which it is now becoming. Don't start up this bullshit again. I understand that you guys don't want to read abyssal posts that look like ass.

In the future, report the post to a moderator, and let them deal with it. I don't think any of us need to start flaming.

So yes, in conclusion, the moderators will use discretion to keep this place in shape. If that means that a few people get offended, great. But let's still try and be civil about it. We're not horribly offensive when someone tries a "Balze sucks" thread. Usually it just gets deleted and the person sent a PM. So we don't need to be terribly offensive about anything else.

I'm not condoning poor grammar. I am saying that we have to be somewhat nice about it. If you can't deal with it in a proper, polite, and MATURE fashion then maybe you're not contributing to this forum in the manner you thought you were.

I won't close this topic unless it gets to flaming levels, but I will warn you right now that if I see horribly insulting posts that the thread will be closed and I will increase warn bars.

Just close it now, it's getting really annoying as everybody wants their say. As LC says, if there is poor grammar or spelling, be lenient and possibly report it to a Moderator if it is desperately out of order.

Anyway, LooseCannon has said pretty much what I tried to say but in much better way since I'm already incredibly frustrated with certain things. This isnt me saying yes spelling crap is OK its me saying the response to that post is not acceptable

I like to distinguish between a person whose grammar is poor but he wants to learn and a person who is being stubbornly stupid. At the same time I like to think that in dealing with the latter, a humorous or strict approach can help.
And besides, this discussion is not about grammar or flaming anymore, it's about common sense.
 
Indeed, it's not the English spelling and "grammer" per se that are annoying, but the unwillingness to learn. I'm much more lenient with somebody who writes poorly, but who's willing to improve, than with someone who thinks, "So what? It's only a forum."

If we don't learn from little mistakes like this, how will we learn from the really big ones (the historians will probably agree)?

Alright. Maverick's point has been made, which is why it is up to a MODERATOR to politely ask the offender to try to spell better. This will be done via PM.

I am now closing this thread. In the future report horrific violations of grammar to the Mod Squad. Other Mod Squadders, if you want me to deal with it, I will.
