Iron Maiden fan on gameshow called "Mastermind"

AFTERGLOW!!!
AN OXFORD United fan with a passion for heavy metal music will tonight step into the Mastermind spotlight.

Tom Scotney, 27, will be shown on BBC2 in the famous black chair facing a grilling from John Humphrys.

His specialist subject is British band Iron Maiden, who have sold more than 100 million records during a 35-year career.

Mr Scotney, from South Oxford, said he enjoyed filming the episode in Manchester last summer, despite the “occasional shriek and outburst” from a rowdy Jeremy Kyle Show taking place in the studio next door.

The journalist, who follows United home and away and is a regular at the Cape of Good Hope pub quiz in East Oxford, said: “I saw an application form and thought, ‘why not?’ I applied but had to go through two rounds of questions before they let me on.

“They called me when I was in the middle of work and I had to stand in the corridor answering a load of questions while everyone stared at me.

“I then had a face-to-face interview and had to choose my specialist subject. There are lots of rules and you can’t have anything that’s been done in the last two or three years.

“I’ve always been an Iron Maiden fan, although I’ve been told I don’t look like one, which I think is meant to be a compliment.

“I’ve seen them live four or five times and doing this gave me an excuse to listen to all the albums again. I also read about half a dozen biographies of the band, which were, without exception, terrible, and I had the songs on shuffle on my iPod for quite a while.”

Mr Scotney said there was a friendly atmosphere between contestants, but quizmaster Mr Humphrys helped ratchet up the tension when it was his turn in the chair.

He said: “It was pretty nerve-racking. I’m looking forward to seeing it myself because I can’t remember all the questions they asked.

“It’s pretty nerve-racking walking up to the chair and getting a stare off Humphrys.

“I was hoping for a bit of compassion from him but he just stared at me – he’s very professional and scary, but I suppose I got off quite lightly compared to the politicians on the Today programme.”

The episode will be shown at 8pm tonight on BBC2.

I see the show is tonight. I wonder if it'll show up on Youtube. It would be interesting to see.

I watched it and decided to skip the next one. Trivia is cool and stuff but I'm not going to go out of my way to watch a british trivia TV show.

I'm certainly far from a Maiden expert, but I got the impression that the questions asked weren't too difficult, at least in comparing past specialists subjects that I've known a bit about.

In fact I also watched the Metallica Mastermind session as well - hadn't seen it before - and the questions seemed a lot more difficult.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5xwmvNA ... re=related

Interesting also the way the girl seemed a bit hesitant in answering the Oasis question in the general knowledge section, although maybe she just pretended to be unsure  :innocent:

another reason i'm not gonna watch it is because youtube videos take forever to buffer. (at least on my computer)

I'm not going to "pause the vid and wait til it loads" when i could be doing better things. There are many youtube videos i'll wait for and an Iron Maiden trivia video isn't one of them

I didn't know this was on but he was just starting his questions as I happened to switch the TV on. A few of the questions were quite a bit trickier than last time. The q's were:

1. What's the name of the 2008 best-of album which shares it name with the tour starting that year?
2. In which pub in Stratford, East London did they play a number of gigs in 1976?
3. In 1981 Bruce joined from which other group?
4. What's the name of the group's mascot?
5. In 1983 they had their first entry in US top 20 with which album?
6. Which festival at Castle Donington did they headline in 1988 and 1992?
7. What was the name of the 1984/5 tour, coninciding with Powerslave?
8. In which S. American country were they banned from performing after being labelled devils and satanists in 1992?
9. In what category did they win an Ivor Novello award in 2001?
10. Under what name did they play a gig at the Oval pub in Norwich in June '92 as a warm-up for their tour?
11. Who was pictured as Eddie's victim on the sleeve of Sanctuary?
12. Dave Murray and Adrian Smith both played for which band before Maiden?
13. At which Brazilian rock festival in 2001 did they headline to over 250,000 people?
14. What was the group's first UK no.1 single?
15. The group's first show in America was in which Las Vegas hotel in June '81?
16. On which album did Blaze make his debut?
17. To which London DJ did they take a demo tape which led to the Soundhouse Tapes EP?

I think the point is that you do other (/better) things while you wait, rather than stare at the red bar slowly creeping its way across the screen. In my case an Iron Maiden trivia video is probably near the top of the list of Youtube videos I'll wait for. ;)

Sometimes the host speaks so fast i hardly understand what he's saying...

it just isn't something that really interests me.

This was the first time I had ever seen this show and from what I gathered, that is part of the show.

There was also a guy that did the Maiden "mastermind". I knew all his questions, i knew all her questions, and i know all of the NA's questions except for number 15.
There are at least a dozen of people on this board that would beat this game.
BTW, here are some of the questions i posted on the Croatian IM forums, just to test how much you know without googling ;)

- List all roles of Michael Keeney in Iron Maiden.
Live keyboard player, Steve's bass tech, acted in the role of Eddie in the "Women in Uniform" promo.
- What is currently the most expensive Maiden collector's item by market price?
2 Minutes To Midnight Japenese 7" promo. If you want to have it, you better have ~ $2.500.
- Which Piece Of Mind songs were never played live?
Sun And Steel, Quest For Fire
- List all electric guitar brands that Adrian Smith used on stage with Iron Maiden.
Check out "Adrian's Axes" topic for detais  :D
- Which Iron Maiden single was never played live?
Virus
- Throughout their career, they had live guitar solo performances from every of three Amigos, and both of their drummers. Why hasn't Steve Harris played a bass solo in concert?
Because he thinks bass solos are boring.
- Name the only non-cover b-side that was played live as a standard part of the tour.
Total Eclipse. At the time of the tour, it was a b-side only.
- Why does Nicko McBrain call "full crash" cymbal "fool crash"?
'cause any fool can hit it!

POM never played live:
Quest For Fire, Sun And Steel

Single never played live:
Virus

Only non-cover b-side played live (standard part of tour):
Total Eclipse, though it was not a b-side only because it was also on the Japanese edition of the album [as track number 7, between "Run To The Hills" and "Gangland

Steve Harris played a solo in concert, namely in Blood On The World's Hands, or don't you see it as a solo? :)

I read those questions in one minute and could answer them all immediately except for this one.

It's not a concert solo, it's an intro to the song played by one instrument only.
If that's a solo, then McBrain's drum fill on the start of Where Eagles dare is a solo performance too.

Eg ->

Clive Burr's drum solo performance on the Killers tour.
McBrain's solo performance on the Piece Of Mind tour.
Murray's solo performance on the Wolrd Slavery Tour.
Smith and Murray's performance on the Somewhere On Tour.
Gers's solo performance on the No Prayer tour.

Hence, they had solo performance act of every instrument, of every of the "standard" instrumentalists, except Steve Harris. That was the motive behind the question.

Now I wouldn't compare the intro to Blood on the World's Hands to the fill in Eagles and here's why. The intro may not be a concert solo but it isn't a fill either. A fill only lasts a few measures. I would call the intro a bass solo. If it was ment to be a concert solo, than perhaps Steve would've extended it. But he didn't. You are right, it is an intro to the song played by one instrument only, making it a solo.
