ICONOCLAST Editor William Grim ranks amongst the lowest of the scum in this world today :

"You've undoubtedly heard by now that a demented fan last week killed heavy metal guitarist Dimebag Abbott at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio. While I am extremely happy to hear that the assassin was shot to death by a brave Columbus policeman and I in no way want to engage in a blaming the victim scenario, I cannot deny that there much in Mr. Abbott's demise of one being hoisted on one's petard. The squalor, inhumanity, filth (both in the metaphorical and hygienic senses), depravity, ugliness and ignorance of everything that heavy metal represents (Like rap, I cannot use the noble term music in a description of heavy metal) creates a mindset among its devotees in which Mr. Abbott's assassination was an event that was all but waiting to happen.

"It was highly amusing, and also terribly sad, to watch on television fans conducting a 'vigil' for the slain Mr. Abbott outside of the Alrosa Villa. It was an assemblage of ignorant, semi-human barbarians who were filthy in attire and manner, intellectually incoherent and above all else, hideously ugly to the point of physical deformity. Here is a definite case in which the outer appearance of these 'fans' accurately represented the hideousness of their souls. That the physical deformity of their ugliness was self-inflicted makes the spiritual tragedy of their misspent lives all the more tragic."

"But one can see why the heavy metal fans so closely identified with Mr. Abbott. He was an ignorant, barbaric, untalented possessor of a guitar and large amplifier system. Freakish in appearance, more simian than human, he was the performer of a type of "entertainment" that can be likened only to a gorilla on PCP. Lacking subtlety, wit, style, emotional range and anything approaching even the smallest iota of intellectual or musical interest, Mr. Abbott was part of a generation that has confused sputum with art and involuntary reflex actions with emotion. "

And that bastard added to the insult here:

I saw this on the dragonforce.com message board. There are plenty of other articles posted on there like this too.

I don't want to dignify this with any sort of reaction, especially considering all the other [a href=\'http://photos1.blogger.com/img/147/2351/640/lesson_learned.jpg\' target=\'_blank\']crap[/a] the guy is posting.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. He seems like a total idiot to me who isn't worthy of all the attention given to him. He is nothing but a musical fascist, who refers to listeners of certain music as if they were a barbaric and lower race than he, who listens to Beethoven. It seems he's completely unable to adapt to modern society and acknowledge that other kinds of popular music exist nowadays. I'm sure he'd prefer living under an oppressive king in the medieval time so he could hear his favourite classical artists play. Also, he knows nothing of politics:

[!--QuoteBegin--][div class=\'quotetop\']QUOTE[/div][div class=\'quotemain\'][!--QuoteEBegin--]Ironically, the sale of heavy metal cds is also the chief way by which funds are raised for both American and European neo-Nazi political organizations. Of course, the barbaric, tribal aspect of heavy metal bespeaks a socialist, rather than conservative, Weltanschauung.[/quote]

First of all the notion of "nazism=socialism" is ridiculous, but then he also uses a German word that seems to be nothing but a fascist buzz word much like "Untermensch" and acts as if his views are any better than national-socialism.

[!--QuoteBegin--][div class=\'quotetop\']QUOTE[/div][div class=\'quotemain\'][!--QuoteEBegin--]Listening to Mozart makes you smarter. The same cannot be said for heavy metal.[/quote]
Seems this guy has never heard Alexander The Great or Paschendale, just naming two songs that teach history. Also, I fail to realise how listening to classical music makes one smarter. I'm not saying classical music is bad, on the contrary, but the notion that the sound of an orchestra or a wailing opera makes somebody smarter is inherently false.

Obviously this douchebag doesn't understand what Iron Maiden is all about. F**k him, I say. He's not worthy of it anyway.

He obviously has never actually listened to heavy metal, or read the lyrics, if he can say something like that with sincerity.

Right now a lynch mob seems like the most reasonable course of action.

But those who believe it dont belong in the metal world anyway, so I guess we can look at that sort of writing as a nice little filter, keeping all the shitheads out of our great little realm [!--emo&:)--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/smile.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'smile.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

"Weltanschauung" means nothing else than ideology. It's a neutral world that is still in use today, it's just got a bit of an antiquated feel today.

By the way, guys, don't you think you're adding to this individual's claims by asking for lynch mobs and insulting him?

Oh I see, thanks for explaining, my German is far from perfect. [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/lol[1].gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'lol[1].gif\' /][!--endemo--] Anyway, I think trying to disprove his writings with good argumentation is fine, but mindless insults only prove his point.

Couldn't agree more. Unlike the modern versions of punk, gothic rap, emo etc etc cultures, heavy metal is much more than just some silly high school clique that is accessible to any poseur in need of some shallow "friends". It's a lifestyle, although unlike cliques it doesn't have very strict rules of what kind of music to listen to(well, obviously metal, but the differences between sub-genres don't matter much as long as somebody doesn't go "OGM I LITSEN 2 LINKEN PRAK N EVENESSENCE IM SO METAL *Bangs head*", let alone clothing. Of course certain styles are preferred, but anybody with a bit of common sense and an actual liking for the things they do aren't labelled poseurs so quickly as in other subcultures.

Well, I actually did E-mail this moron. Not so much to prove him wrong, but more to laugh at his stupidity. [!--emo&:D--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/biggrin.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'biggrin.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Yeah, I don't think this guy, or anybody else like him, merit any consideration in any way. His commenting on subjects that he knows little or nothing of, only displays his foolish prejudices and goes to show that a wide vocabulary doesn't qualify one as smart if their cognitive processes are hindered by narrow/closed-mindedness.
He obviously lives in a perfect little world with snobbish little people - he can keep it!

Personally, I think the most embarassing thing to me this dude ever wrote isn't the part about "us" being barbarians, but the notion of Michael Moore being marxist.

People like this say outrageous things in the hope that people will pay attention to them. Liken it to the pre-teen who pulls the hair of the girl he thinks is cute. All he wants is attention - no matter of what sort.

He's probably a 40 year-old man who still lives with his mom and 10 cats who has nothing better to do then insult metal because he was a failure at life. I would like to see him produce the "filth" Dimebag could with a guitar. Don't listen to the shit this guy is saying. He's probably sitting at home right now crying that Disco ended in the 80's and is mad because metal is great enough to have outlived so many different generes. Yep. I read Brave New World because of the song. Same thing with Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Dune. I learned a lot about Alexander the Great thanks to that song.

Maiden got me to read Phantom of the Opera, Edgar Allan Poe(Murder in the rue morgue!) Brave New World and Dune, and they got me interested in Alexander the Great, the Great War, WW II, The Crimean War... Thanks to them I'll also soon be picking up Bram Stoker's Dracula and The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, I'll watch movies they made books about. Even if they don't teach me directly(with exception of Alexander the Great perhaps), they still got me interested in subjects I would normally pay little or no attention to, and literature I never even heard of before.

I serriously doubt that emailing this guy and telling him he's an idiot would do anything other than make him believe his own bullshit more. Maybe it would be more productive to email media sources deploring this guys beliefs... but then the net is all about freedom of speech and he's using his to cause controvercy. Quite frankly he's not even worse the effort it took to type this

Well, when I first read the original post i did feel like writing something to him to prove him wrong, as I read everybody else's posts I slowly realized it wasn't worth it. Honestly, who cares? I think it is better to lead by example with little to no preaching. When people find out into metal they are blown away because I do not dress like a metalhead, nor do I sport long hair and beard. Seeing their suprised faces is good enough for me.
