If you had to give someone one album to get them into IE, which would it be? (AiA doesn't count! :p)
Days of Purgatory. Fantastic overview, I had this before the studio albums and it didn't prevent me from liking the stuff without Barlow.

From the regular studio albums I would suggest both Night of the Stormrider and Burnt Offerings.

Night of the Storm Rider is a combo of the in-your-face-riffs inspired by Metallica/Slayer on one hand; and the dynamics, tempo- and rhythm changes, energy and melodic feel inspired by Maiden on the other hand. Even if Barlow is not singing on it. This previous singer doesn't have the warmth and emotion of Barlow but his way of singing/screaming fits the music perfectly.

A lot of Iced Earth's strongest tracks are on this record. I find it much better and a lot more adventurous than their recent stuff. A true classic in the metal genre. Not in the least because this is really an album with "drive". So energetic and well produced, a rare gem in the history of metal. Probably also one of the (if not THE) best collection of guitar riffs ever. Awesome while driving the car, I can really recommend that!

When I first heard Burnt Offerings, I remember that the non-Alive in Athens tracks were great discoveries (I heard AiA first). Even if they've rarely or never seen the stage, and never featured on Days of Purgatory or on any other compilation, til this day I think that Burning Oasis and Creature Failure kick major ass. The dark atmosphere rules and Barlow's vocal contributions are among the best he's done.

So much anger and threat can be heard from this album. The band went through a difficult time and it's as if you're hearing how they canalized that through the music. Too bad Schaffer himself doesn't appreciate this album, but Alive in Athens truly proved the power of the Burnt Offerings songs and really, again: the non Alive in Athens tracks are way stronger than the lesser material from most other studio albums which are not on Alive in Athens.

Alive in Athens? That's still the most rewarding pick. :)

What are your opinions on Stu Block?
I wish he showed more of himself.

Are IE's glory days behind them or do they have another "classic" album in them? Or are they better than ever now?
Never say never, but it looks like the quality of the nineties is never coming back.

Interesting picks, Foro. Stormrider was my first IE album and while it took a really long time to click, something about it made me want to keep coming back to it.

Burnt Offerings is probably my favorite album of theirs, every song is a gem. It's probably the only IE album where I can hear a substantial amount of passion in the playing and songwriting. After this IE really refined their sound but started to become very formulaic in the process. They were good at what they did, but nothing had the drive of Burnt Offerings, or even Stormrider. On Burnt Offerings I hear a band that's angry and hungry for recognition. On the albums following I hear a band that's quite complacent in their sound.

But yea, AiA is the obvious choice, which is why I didn't want people picking it! :p Oddly enough, it was the last IE album I managed to get my hands on. I wonder what my perception of the band would've been like if I heard it first, like most recommended I do. I kinda like hearing it the way I heard it though; after becoming familiar with the band's catalog and thinking that these songs were about as good as it gets, here's an album that takes all the best moments from these albums and turns it up to 12. Perhaps my favorite live album of all time. One of the few where I feel as if I'm actually at the concert.

I think that by hearing AiA later, you might appreciate SWTWC more. The other way around, in my experience, Something Wicked is less interesting, lacking power. And the non AiA songs are not that good, as argued above (imo). Same goes for Dark Saga but to a lesser extent. It's especially Something Wicked that suffers from AiA. Just my 2 cents.

I could agree with this actually. I definitely liked SWTWC more before I heard AiA. I still love SWTWC but the studio songs really pale in comparison to those on AiA, and pretty much everything you need from that album is on there. That version of Disciples of the Lie...:rocker: The sequencing of that album also annoys me. The heavy song/ballad/heavy song/ballad format really kills any momentum that album could have.

Dark Saga is only lesser to me because the songs aren't very great in the first place and don't really improve on the live album. Although once again, if I want to listen to Dark Saga songs, AiA is my go to. Actually, the only album where this isn't true is Burnt Offerings.

One album that could've really used the live treatment was Horror Show. The production is way too polished for me and kills the energy on some songs. I imagine it'd be much more lively on stage. This was definitely true for Damien when I saw the Dystopia tour, one of the highlights!

So true...I saw them at least 5-6 times when they were supporting Horror Show. They played Damien and Dracula every night, and occasionally Wolf and Jack, and they were astounding.

I don't think that anyone here argues that Alive in Athens is, bar none, the best Iced Earth album of them all. It is one of the true great live albums.

You must be missing a "not" somewhere, because everybody here "argues that Alive in Athens is, bar none, the best Iced Earth album of them all."

mmm, "with the statement that AiA" etc. But in common parlance, that is usually dropped in this generation of speakers.

My old brain then. Or I've been at computer coding too much lately, and my brain is parsing posts too literally...

Code:
SMX runtime error 0x3E: negation expected. return False. resetting parsing nodes...
