Iced Earth and Maiden

I've been listening to Iced Earth for 8 months. But I've noticed that they are like Maiden. A little TOO much. they are a very good band, but sooner or later,they will have to adapt their own style. it's as if they are trying to replace maiden. I mean, like on"1776", the riff sounds almost like"2 Minutes to Midnight".

I once heard an Iced Earth recording entitled "Hallowed Be Thy Name", which bears some vague similarity to the Iron Maiden song of the same name. Therefore I hypothesize that both of these bands are members of the same political party.

I've never heard Iced Earth, but haven't they done a cover of Transylvania?
 
I don't think you fully understood me. I know that they are part of a same style, i'm 14, but not stupid. What I'm trying to say, and many will not agree with me,is thatusually bands of the same order must battle each other. and only one band can come to the top, leaving the other band crashing to get back up. and Iced Earth is a really awesome band, but they wouldn't last in such a battle of the gods. so what I'm trying to say is, Don't you think that such a talented band should not try to compete with other bands so early in their days? don't you think that they should try to break off of a party to make their own. from AC/DC to Ozzy, all the great rock and metal bands have their own style. And don't you think that Iced Earth would get a bigger up coming if they earned their own style? Bands that try to imitate other bands end up nowhere. But I also think that they are seeing that, because they have kind'a got off to their own start. but someone has to agree with me, that every band must follow a balance of musical passage, that can sustain them for a long period. so that in the end, they can look back and say "We made it this far,why stop now?" and to develop their own style is like a motivation,also. some one has to agree with me. And yes, they did do a remake of Trnsylvania.

Since you've been listening to Iced Earth for the past 8 months you must quite a bit about them already, and checked out their 7 original albums to know what you're talking about.

Their first CD was released in 1991... I think that makes them slightly old. 11 years younger than Maiden, but its not like they just released their debut.

Jon Schaffer, founding guitarist of Iced Earth, has openly expressed his admiration of Steve Harris many times. The band has covered Hallowed Be Thy Name, Transylvania, and I've heard live covers of the Trooper and Fear of the Dark. Its no secret he likes their style so much.

Jon Schaffer probably doesn't even consider himself equal to Maiden for a battle of the bands. He'd take them on, but I think he looks up to their work more than he does try to challenge it.

How can you possibly compare that shit with Maiden?
Have you heard theire cover versions of Number.... & Halloweed be thy....

I have and I must admit that they did a brilliant job. Barlow gives 'Hallowed...' even more depth to the song with his unique way of singing.

But Iced Earth also have their own exceptional compositions. Simply fantastic!
 
I've listened to most maiden albums and to all iced earth albums for more than just 8 months and I haven't found any obvious similarity between the bands. Schaffer has said that thanks to maiden he decided to become a metal band and I've read reviews that say IE also uses the "galloping"rythm Maiden created, but I haven't noticed it as much like I have with Sonata arctica and other bands. But I would say their sound is very different.
 
I love Iced Earth because they're different than Maiden. I'm no technocrat here, so bear with me. Iced Earth's material (for the most part) is very different than Maiden. Some days I want to hear horror stories - I want to hear about the night we travelled to Stygian (FUCK! That song is AMAZING!)

Their sound is darker, a little less precise to my ears. Barlow is the exact opposite of Bruce - deep where he is high, high where he is deep. Of course, I love Ripper too...
 
Iced Earth are nothing like Iron Maiden apart from some of their more gallopy riffs. They're much closer to something like Slayer than Maiden (talking about their early stuff, anyway).

They have developed their own style already. The first two albums were generic (and quite good) thrash, their third, Burnt Offerings, was thrashy but had some power metal elements. Dark Saga and the following albums were a unique power/heavy blend. The Glorious Burden sees them returning to a thrashier style. Their Barlow-period albums all had an incredibly operatic feel, the exact opposite of Iron Maiden in my eyes.
 
I would disagree a bit with that. I'd say The Glorious Burden does have thrash-like songs (The Reckoning, Declaration Day, and Red Baron/Blue Max), but it also has slower, more melodic songs (Valley Forge & When the Eagle Cries). Power metal (Attilla & Waterloo) is represented, as well as possibly the finest song they've ever produced, the very operatic Gettysburg. Mm. Gettysburg.
 
If you think that Iced earth sounds like Maiden, what about ALL power metal bands sounds the same, edguy , helloween etc etc etc etc, but whatever if they play good i don't care !!! You can't be original in music anymore everything is allready done before....
 
I disagree, one can still be original. Sure Edguy sounds a lot like helloween, but they are still edguy and that edguyNESS is what makes them original. Incidently, I burnt my girlfriend a Sonata Arctica CD a while ago and a week ago or so I was playing Edguy in my car and she said, "are those the same guys you gave me?" "no" "oh they all sound the same." aaah the untrained ear lol.
 
Iced Earth pwn. Check out "Live In Athens"; it's comprable to "Rock In Rio" in terms of awsomeness.

Some of their music is comparable to Iron Maiden; although they tend to be a lot darker and gloomier than Maiden ever was, even moreso than the Blaze era. Their cover of "Transylvania" on "Horror Show" is, IMO, better than the one from "Iron Maiden"; it's heavier.

I like Maiden a bit more... but damn, Iced Earth are some stiff competition for them.
