Hi guys, as I announced the other day, yesterday 18th november i was going to meet nicko and i did!
I was so excited to meet nicko that i arrived about 6 hours before the gig start so i could get easily the best place in the venue, about 3-4 metres from his drum kit, on the side, perfect to see him playing.
INTERESTING BITS IN THIS REPORT I THINK.

But before the gig nicko had in schedule to have a drum clinic! The drum clinic should have started at 18.00 o'clock but nicko was late, he had an adventurous day and when he arrived he was not happy with the drum effects, so he got on stage (2 metres from me!!!!) and started fixing the drums, it was amazing to see how much accuracy he put into it!

FIRST WORDS I HEARD FROM NICKO
The first words i heard from the man was, while he was fixing his drum kit, he came about 50 cm next to me and speaking with a member of the band Anthenora (the italian cover band he plays with) he said
"I don't wanna a fucking loud drum sound, i want it to sound good! I'm not a sound engineer nor a genius, it's not difficult to understand that if you punt something on a wooden stage floor it makes noise" (he wasn't happy with the sound). He played for the soundcheck 23.58, a bit of murders in the rue morgue and a bit of Wrathchild!
While doing this he started greeting the crowd and all of us started taking pics of him. Then he went to the dressing room, he came back, took a beer and got on stage for his drum clinic!

THE DRUM CLINIC
At this point there were very few people attending the drum clinic, not more than 50 me included and i had the best place of all!
He started making some jokes, and then he performed only with drums WHERE EAGLES DARE and a PINK FLOYD bit. It was amazing, i could see him perfectly and the greatest part was that since i was the closest to him nicko often looked at me while playing and one particular time he stayed about 20 seconds looking me in the eyes and making me funny faces to make me laugh...always while playing!! AMAZING!
He then explained that a month ago he was in london and he saw a THOMAS LANG drum show, he said he was crazy, a fantastic drum player and that "joking" thomas lang should get a life instead of spending the day practicing on drums to play like that He was joking obviously!

Now I'll talk about the specific INTERESTING THINGS (i hope ) he said during the drum clinic:

1)WHY DO NICKO PLAYS WITH REVERSE (sorry i don't know the exact word, but i hope you understand, just in case ask me and i'll try to explain it better) DRUMSTICKS?

-Nicko said that this way, you get a louder drum sound with a less effort, you are less tired when you play this way and you get a better sound! And he showed this technique to us all, even playing with his drumsticks on the floor and then on the drums!
He then added that you have to give as a present a pair of the drumstick TO THE BLOODY SINGER (Bruce ) because often when he goes away from the drums, there's always someone getting the drumsticks and starting playing the drums, but not with REVERSE drumsticks, so that when Nicko comes back to play and he reverses the drumsticks there are splinters on the drumstick
He said that generally is alwas Bruce that plays the drums and Nicko added "BRUCE, i can't sing like you, but you clearly aren't a good drummer "

2)WHERE EAGLES DARE - Nicko after having played this song on drums explained that steve didn't like the first drum part nicko had in mind and so he had to change it in the actual drum part. He then said that Where eagles dare is EASY to play on drums although it sounds difficult! He said that is all about triplets and he showed the thing playing drumsticks on a chair! Amazing! He then played it on air guitar
He then added that maybe Maiden will play it on the next tour.

3)THE WICKER MAN - Nicko said he doesn't use double bass pedal (we all know that) and then he played the song entirely on the drums, with us, the crowd singing it! Great! My friend took a couple of VIDEOS OF HIS right FOOT WORK on the song and i'll make it available later guys!

4)CLIVE/NICKO - Nicko explained that he changed clive's drumlines because he had to get the songs "HIS", he wanted to get them more personal, so he changed the drumlines a bit and he showed the difference between him and clive by playing RUN to the hills on drums, in the way clive did and then in the way he does.

5)BEST GIG OF HIS LIFE - The best gig of his life was on the day her mother died, in 2000, in Bremen i think. He didn't want to go on stage, he prayed, and then said that God gave him the strenght to play and when he got on stage he felt someone was helping him. He said that his drumming was the easiest thing ever, and that the band could not believe how greatly he was playing! This was a very emotionating part! Another great gig was Rock In Rio although he was a bit nervous seeing all the crowd there...he sang the intro
6)STEVE IS IRON MAIDEN - Nicko explained steve is the absolute heart of Iron Maiden and that one day he and Steve were talking about the band and Steve said "If i'll leave you can always find another bass player" and nicko stopped him "no way mate, if you leave there is no more Iron Maiden, if I leave you can find another drummer, but if you leave IRon Maiden are dead"

7)MAIDEN GUYS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS? The answer is no, Everyone is like in the early days apart from Bruce. Nicko said that bruce has changed a lot...for good! When he left in 1993 nicko said that bruce wasn't into the band anymore, you could talk to him and he did not answer, he was on another planet. Then since the reunion, he found Bruce changed for good, Bruce got a job with an airline company and is very important. Nicko says that when Bruce flies he recharge his batteries and when he come back to play with maiden he is 150 % into it! And this is amazing!

8)NEW FRONTIER - He smiling said that it's one of his favourite songs And then talked about God, his view on the human nature.

9)ALEXANDER THE GREAT - Nicko said that they rehearsed this song for ONE TOUR but Adrian Smith could not get a part right. He played the part that Adrian couldn't play with his drumsticks but i can't remember which is the exact bit! Nicko explained that it is a very difficult passage for a guitarist and Steve is crazy in writing those things
He also added that he thought that if adrian could not get right the part, there's always Dave that can try, so maybe they didn't even want to play it.
Unfortunately i could not get the chance to ask him if they will, but for what i've understood from his comments is that they are WILLING TO try to perform that song live in the next tours.

10)SONGS ON THE NEXT TOUR - Nicko here was very clear: the early years dvd is about the first years, the first 4 albums, so the songs will be PRIMARLY from the FIRST 4 ALBUMS. He said that of course the all-time classic will be on the setlist (for exemple he said that here in italy we're extremely loud on Fear of the dark, so a classic like this will be almost certainly played).
He NAMED a few songs that may appear on the setlist: WHERE EAGLES DARE, PROWLER, 22 ACACIA AVENUE, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, maybe DRIFTER, but they haven't decided yet, so these are just ideas! Us on the audience suggested TO TAME A LAND and he answered "that's an idea!"He said he would like NOT to play RUN TO THE HILLS because he's bored in playing that again but they will see. As stated above they didn't choose the setlist yet but will be primarly songs from the first albums.

11)IRON MAIDEN FUTURE - How long maiden will last? Nicko said that he talked about this with Steve and for his part he would die on stage. He mimed Adrian Smith and Bruce playing when old, incredibly funny
So hopefully they'll carry on fore many years! He then explained that Steve always wants to do a 2 hours show, like him, while the others are a bit more...tired, especially bruce who cares about his voice and states that he is not young anymore. And then he started imitating Bruce on stage

NEXT ALBUM: they'll work on the album next year, unfortunately here the time was running out and i could not make him the specific question about this.

NEXT TOUR: he said that the tour dates will be released in the next weeks, and that they will be in ITALY NEXT YEAR. Unfortunately i couldn't ask him about other european countries.

I won't go too much into what he said about this issue, but i would say to all the Americans here not to hope to much about maiden future tours. Don't let me go too much into this, but i'm not positive about maiden future in the IS.

After the drum clinic he got away to eat something and came back for the gig with anthenora and the setlist was:
Intro : Ides of March
Murders in the rue morgue
Wrathchild
23.58
Brave new world
Heaven can wait
Blood Brothers
22 Acacia Avenue
Hallowed be thy name
Fear of the dark
Iron Maiden
Number of the beast
The Trooper

Great gig and great crowd response, there were lots of people for the gig! After the gig about 30-50 fans among me were waiting for nicko to sign stuffs and taking pics but i don't know what happened, the staff said that nicko was very angry about something and that he went away from a backdoor. Maybe he had some problems for the today's gig in greece, i don't know what happened, since nicko was very happy 2 minutes before.
Anyway i didn't get my stuff signed nor a pic with him, but i had a wonderful evening with an amazing person and character which was all the time 2 metres from me and even closer! I can't wait for his next drum clinics!

VIDEOS OF 15 SECONDS EACH AND PICS TO COME

Hope you enjoyed, at least my effort.

This report is greatly appreciated.

I laughed at the bit about making Clive's drumlines "his". Jan does the same with Adrian's solos by butchering them! [!--emo&:D--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/biggrin.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'biggrin.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

If anyone has questions that maybe i missed to include tell me and i'll see if nicko said anything about this.

I hope that the bit about Nicko/Clive Drumming is clear and also the rest of the report. Not being a native english speaker i may use some terms not appropriated.

Would you mind going into detail? Did he say that they won't be visiting North America, or that they'll only have a few gigs in the us and canada?

Being a young fan in Canada is a real drag considering I wasn't around when they used to always play Toronto, but now that I'm older, and recently got into maiden, I missed my only chance to see them back in 2003. It'd really suck if they chose not to tour here any less than other countries- It's just not fair.
